Question for the community...

I have really loved using the Share ETA feature on iOS 13 Maps app to quickly send my ETA to friends and family when meeting up with them. However, I've noticed that when I share my ETA the receiver (if they have an Apple Watch) only gets the notification on the iPhone and NOT on their watch. This seems like such a strange oversight on Apple's part (if this is indeed the expected behavior). This means if a friend is wearing an Apple Watch and has their iPhone in their pocket or bag, they will actually get the sound notification on their phone and will have to take out the phone to see what the notification was for since the Watch shows zero signs that a notification was received on the iPhone. With all the control over integration that Apple has between software and hardware can this truly be the way this is intended to work?

Does anyone know if my experiences with the Share ETA function is working as intended or are others getting Share ETA notification on their Apple Watch?

Thanks for the community feedback in advance

I have experienced the same thing. Though I haven’t confirmed this behaviour after the release of watchOS 6.0.1; however, the notifications definitely didn’t make it through before that and if you’re on watchOS 6.0.1, it seems like the issue may still persist. You’re definitely not alone though.

I’m remaining hopeful that watchOS 6.1 adds this capability (since Share ETA was released after the release of watchOS 6) with an updated Maps app on the Watch. If not, it’s probably worth sending feedback using the Feedback Assistant. The more feedback reports they get, the more likely they are to act upon it.

I'm not sure about the Apple map app, but personally I use Citymapper for my trips and daily commutes and it syncs between my phone and watch like a charm.

Hey Anzio,

Your observation is an astute and helpful observation! It never occurred to me that WatchOS 6 was released a bit BEFORE the new Share ETA feature on iOS 13 was released and that that could be the reason for this notification behavior. You are most likely correct that this is the reason for that. I can however confirm that WatchOS 6.0.1 still has the same bug so seems that Apple has yet to address it for the moment. Perhaps WatchOS 6.1 will fix this problem. I have done as you suggested and filed a bug report in the event that nobody else has reported one for this issues (unlikely I’m sure). Seems like the focus on all the new features of iOS 13 has had the unfortunate side effect of causing a more buggy release compared to the release of iOS 12. As much as I love new and helpful features as the next person, I much prefer a slower feature cycle for more stable releases. Thanks again though for your thoughtful and helpful observation.

Btw, can anyone who is on WatchOS 6.1 beta confirm if this bug has been addressed?

Thank you

As you've probably already tested, this behaviour appears to be the same with the public release of watchOS 6.1. Hopefully they'll address it shortly! It's such a weird oversight.

Oh dang that's disappointing to learn! No, I had not yet tested this function in WatchOS 6.1 beta or in the public version released today so thank you so much Anzio for being helpful and confirming that this still has not been addressed by Apple for the moment. Agreed that this is a weird oversight given that Apple often speaks about such integration between their devices and between the software that runs them as being one of the primary advantages of their ecosystem. I have filed a bug report and I will follow up with them from time to time and if I learn anything new I will be sure to update back here in the event it can be helpful to others.

As a side note, I also just wanted to specifically call to attention and thank you Anzio you for the civil and helpful and articulate manner in which you've engaged me on writing about this issue here on this forum. I initially hesitated writing at all because so much of the conversations on these forums seem so unproductive and needlessly hostile that I wondered if anything worthwhile could be accomplished by tapping into the community regarding this matter. I really appreciate the exchange here with you. Thank you

Likewise! It's always nice to come across someone who both has the same issue as you and (more importantly) is willing to work together to come to some solution or understanding of what's happening. Always nice to see collaboration among friendly faces such as yourself. People are sometimes too quick to jump on each other online, so it's welcoming to see attitudes like yours.

I've also got a bug report lodged and will update here if I hear anything back or notice any change in a future watchOS update.

PS: I hesitated creating a thread for similar reasons. I wasn't confident I'd come across anyone else who noticed this issue or would even lend an ear to the problem, so your post gave me some relief in knowing I'm not alone. I appreciate the help! Hope to see your posts around the forum in the future (maybe on this post when Share ETA notifications make their way to watchOS in the very near future. Hint hint Apple. :p). Take care!

I’m in the same boat about announce message with Siri. Works when Powerbeats are connected to phone but doesn’t when connected to watch.
