No Siri Voice using Studio Display Mic?

Small but completely repeatable bug.

I use a MacBook Air with the lid open connected to an Apple Studio Display as the primary monitor.

Siri voice mode will not work if the Studio Display mic is set as the default: the "orb" graphic appears for a split second, then there is a boop and it closes. This is the same whether I press the mic icon, or F5. It does work if I set the Mac to use its built-in mic in the Sound settings.

With trial and error I can get it to work by toggling "Hey Siri" (and doing the five training steps again, every time, smh) and the input setting in Sounds. That does not survive a restart.

Not much I can do about it but it is still there in the latest betas. What it reminds me of though is when ChatGPT supported voice (as opposed to transcribing) in the native app. It had a bug for a long time where it would confuse its own voice from the Studio Display speakers as an interruption, and stop. They "fixed" that by killing first the feature, then the app!

That is crazy. I have a ViewSonic with a Monoprice BT speaker/Mic and was never able to speak to (dumb a$$) Siri. Supposedly Apple claimed some security issue.....but of course it was a "Buy an Apple monitor" issue. However I'm exceedingly surprised that speaking to Siri is now working in the 27 Betas. Hope it is not a fluke that Apple will take away soon. Did just update and still working.

This is also true. Even when I do get it to work it just… isn't very good? You can't just talk, you have to press a button or invoke it even in a continuous conversation where it has context unless you pretty-much interrupt it as the time-out is so aggressive. Its tone remains over-confident and lacking in humility given how wrong it often is. I am trying with use cases but it made the ones I do use on my Watch (starting a workout being the main one, sometimes a timer) slower and less reliable.

I've seen the reviews and I think I must be doing something wrong? Like what do Joanna Stern and Marques Brownlee see that I do not? Real question! 🙂

It seems if you have "Hey Siri" or "Siri" turned off to invoke it, then yes you have to push the button every time.

I had mine set like this and the same was happening.

When I turned the voice prompt on and invoke Siri, it keeps listening after replies and you can keep the conversation going. Hopefully, if I decide Siri is useful enough, they change this behaviour by the final, as I hate having the stupid voice prompt enabled, as with more recent versions of Siri it seems to not always respect whose voice is invoking it.

Seen the mic-selection non-persistence pattern with my Studio Display on the Mac Studio too — the default input keeps flipping back to something else after sleep or a restart, even when I pin it explicitly in Sound settings.

One stopgap that's worked here: open Audio MIDI Setup, create an Aggregate Device that includes only the Studio Display mic, and set that aggregate as the default input. Something about the aggregate wrapper makes the default-input assignment actually stick across restarts. It doesn't cure the Siri-specific bug you're describing, but it does mean you're not redoing the training every reboot. My guess is whatever coordinates default I/O gets reset when it's a direct display-attached device, and the aggregate hides that from the reset path.

I'm confused. I have the same issue as you but I dont even have the option to use 'hey siri' or 'siri'.
I have only just bought my Apple Studio Display 2026 to go with my Mac Mini M4 Pro, but I read that by using a studio display then 'Hey Siri' becomes available? It's like my Mac Mini doesnt recognise I'm using a Studio Display (in this regard).

Edit to add : I don't have a 'requests' section in my Siri settings like I'm supposed to?
