I just bought a second generation iPad Pro 12,9 and realised there's no official smart case for it. WHY? Why is there only a smart cover? I want to protect the back of it as well. Do any of you know more about it, is a case going to be released?

Not as far as anyone knows. And it seems really doubtful now, considering it’s been almost a year since it was released.

It honestly doesn't need one. I use the Smart Cover, and that seems like quite enough.
I like to use the case (I use the first gen one on my second gen) when I’m around my young child. But otherwise, I like just using the Smart Cover or ASK. And I have the sleeve for when I transport it.

Why would it not need one?

the silicone back for gen 1 , which I use for gen 2 minus the flash being covered, adds extra grip and front lip protection if you ever drop your iPad. and I have once or twice now

I've had this 12.9 iPad Pro for over two years now, and I've never found that I needed extra grippiness. The Smart Cover is secure enough. I've never dropped it or come close. I have a feeling that even with a lip, the fall of a very flat, 1.53 lb. piece of metal and glass is going to end badly.

But if you want a silicone back, you can find one easily on Amazon for under $10.

If you're looking for a Smart Case, I saw some posts on the forum a while back for a leather Smart Case that seems to be identical to Apple's sold by a German brand, but I can't recall the name of it at this time. There are also some imitations on eBay, but I don't know if the product pictures are accurate.

Apple decided to separately sell a Smart Cover and a Silicone Case for the first generation 12.9, but now only the Smart Cover is sold for the second generation. However, you can still get a Silicone Case for the 12.9 from Target or eBay, although it's a bit pricey. I got one and it fits the second generation just fine.

I remember using a case for my first iPod touch. It was nice but after awhile dirt would get trapped which later scratched the back. So for my iPad I opted not to get one. Well years later it still looks new. I have the smart cover and a sleeve that I use to transport it. If you do find one that fits the back, make sure you keep the cover and the back clean.

That is seriously retarded. :(

That’s what I’m saying is at least once but I believe twice mine has fallen on a hard wooden floor, on its face specifically
One time, from waist height and zero damage to screen or frame I checked thoroughly

It literally saved my iPad. The silicone thick material coupled with large surface area turns out to be quite shock absorbent! It also completes the charcoal grey smart
Keyboard look, and makes it so you can throw it in a bag without worrying about the back getting beat up by other things in the same bag

My 9.7 pro has a silicone case too. Love these things

I found it! The site is in German, but it appears you can make an account and choose your home country. https://www.arktis.de/iceo-ipad-pro-12-9-2017-smartcover-case-schwarz/

This post has some pictures of the 10.5" version of the case.

Nice color you got there :)

Mine came today (as posted earlier in this thread, ordered from german retailer arktis.de for 30€). Not quite sure if these two are the same/identical. If so, you got a sweet deal ;)

I attached some pics to this post.
Cutouts are good, magnet is strong enough (front does not open when holding upside down - only when i shake it strongly).
I am very pleased - material is pu leather, not real leather. thats fine with me as long as it lasts at least two years.

cheers

Cool, thanks man! It's probably also the best looking one I've seen so far. Too bad it's not real leather though, I'm used to the leather of the smart case I have on my Air right now, I'm just disappointed Apple didn't make a real case for its most expensive iPad :/
