Well, your phone is on silent..

Imagine you're in a room that's completely silent, and you're scrolling through your facebook feed and a video starts playing with the sound. Not a great scenario.

I'd rather have to take action to have a video make sound when my phone's on silent, then assume I want the sound (when the phone is on silent) and play when it really shouldn't.

I turned off autoplay which is an equally idiotic feature.

How absurd just think the iPhone on silent doesn't play sound.
Undoubtably the most stupid thread of the year. Come to think of it, I think you also hold the title for runner up and third place.

Maybe this will help you understand:

Agreed, but that's no the only case where this would come in handy.

The silent switch is there for a reason. Imagine how confusing/problematic it would be if someone turns the phone to silent, expecting it to be silent, and it still makes noise!

It's much easier to specifically turn up the volume for an app when you need to, as opposed to having to turn down the volume unexpectedly because the "silent" switch does not do its job.

You set the phone on silent for a reason!

Yes, and the reason is that I don't want unexpected sounds that other people are sending me.

If I play a video or start a game that's fairly expected, is it not?

This was an issue back in 2008 when the app store was new. About half the games went silent with the mute switch and the others did not.

Over time they all started to migrate and I'd say that now 99% of games play sound while the mute switch is on.

Since that's the way video games work I see no reason for other iPhone apps to take a different approach. We're all used to that now. I've kind of been thinking that the silent videos in iOS 8 were a bug. But now that 8.1 is out it's seeming more intentional. I don't know why it had to switch now, after 7 years of it working fine the other way.

What? Volume doesn't help. I have to physically turn the mute switch off to watch videos now. And then, of course, I get texts blaring at me while I'm watching a movie. The old way where I could silence text sounds while watching videos was so much better.

This makes no sense. I can't believe the majority of posters here LIKE getting text message sounds when they're watching a video.

Exactly, thank you. You explained this perfectly. The reason for the majority here defending and denying it is because they will defend Apple no matter how wrong they are. Pathetic.

Actually, I think it's more like people are just getting tired of you starting a new thread every time you have a thought, and just like to go against whatever you're saying. :)

If the content of your original post is going to be "WTF" (instead of a thoughtful explanation like Small White Car took the time to do), then you're going to get the kind of replies that you've seen in this thread.

A feature may be wrong for YOU, that doesn't mean it is wrong for everyone. Why bother making these threads if you are just going to complain when people have different thoughts or opinions?

This is probably more accurate :)

yup. like 15 threads started the last two weeks. No one cares dude.

What do you expect when you come to an Apple-centric forum and continue to make threads about everything you hate about their products?

I don't think anyone here is saying Apple is perfect, at least I'm not. The reason you get the responses you do (as others have said) is your attitude and constant complaining. If you don't like it, buy any other phone. At least then you will have new topics to create threads about.

I don't complain, I'm usually asking for help or trying to find explanations.

Yeah it puts the RINGER on silent. Sucks that any media is silent too. I put it on SILENT to silence the ringer. I can control media with low volume, but thats not an option on SILENT

Exactly, as a poster mentioned above it's the opposite of how every other app works. Ridiculously stupid.

I ****ing wish. Sometimes if I'm somewhere where it's not tactful to have my phone blasting something but I want to watch a video where sound is not really needed (bloopers, stuff on youtube), I have been surprised when I think my phone isn't going to emit noise and it still plays the video sound despite it being on silent. It's on silent, why is it emitting noise? If I wanted it to play noise, I'd take it off silent. *grumble*.

The whole point of it being on silent is i don't want it emitting noise!

(though something tells me that maybe I should check to see if iOS 8 still does this. My iphone 5 with iOS 7 did it and it was a huge pet peeve of mine. The whole point of a silent button to me was to mute my phone. Not just mute certain things and make me guess what was and what wasn't muted).

Edit: *sigh* Just checked. OP is off his rocker, it still plays sound in video even when silenced. Damnit.

I still get video volume when on silent (sometimes)

Personally, I'd like to keep calls silent but still have the option of video volume. But I understand the logic in that not being the case. So be it.

The issue I'm having is that some videos do play with sound when the phone is on silent. Some don't. The behavior is not consistent.

Anyone else experience this?
