Lol at all of the replies vigilantly defending Apple. The phone is on silent u dummy! Look, the switch ought to silence the ringer and notifications, but LEAVE everything else. Why should he have to enable ringer volume to hear a video? Doesn't make any sense. One thing I don't like about iOS is Apple "figuring out" every little detail for users under the guise of making it "easier" to use. Why don't they start offering users basic customization options, like how I want to arrange icons on the home screen, or a basic file manager so I can attach actual attachments on my phone other than camera roll. I agree OP! Oh wait, there's Android

Personally, I'd like to keep calls silent but still have the option of video volume. But I understand the logic in that not being the case. So be it.

The issue I'm having is that some videos do play with sound when the phone is on silent. Some don't. The behavior is not consistent.

Anyone else experience this?

Yup, or cut in and out

Maybe this will help you understand:

I'm glad to see that you got your training in Internet Condescension, but I've actually noticed some weird stuff going on with this since iOS 8.

1. Now I seem to actually have to turn the phone off of silent in order to play, rather than turning the volume up.

2. Then, I may have to restart the video in order to get the sound to play.

3. I may also have to deal with the picture being frozen until I reload the page that I'm on.

So it's a bit wonky. I'd be interested to hear how many people are experiencing at least some or all of these issues.

Jeez a lot of hate in here.

For what it's worth, I agree with you 100% OP.

I always have my phone on silent with vibrate for texts/calls/emails/etc. The sounds are a nuisance to me. But yet I still like to watch videos. As you said, opening a video is deliberate and not remotely comparable to a text/email/call. It bothers me just as much.

There certainly was no hate or even rudeness in my post. Its all true. I stand by what I said in both posts you quoted. Especially the first quoted.

Responding to a perfectly reasonable question with "Undoubtedly the most stupid thread of the year" is rude and hateful. Especially when at least half of the posters in the thread agree with the OP. Your opinion is not superior to anyone else's, get off your high horse.

And there were no "facts" in your post, just opinions. If anything our stance that it is illogical that videos don't play sound is more supported by facts than yours as most apps function the opposite way and still play sound when the ringer is on silent.

ok what about vine?

Not sure I don't use that but almost every app works the way we're describing. Not sure why Apple decided it knew what was best. No one complained about it before so why fix something that's not broken?

It's the alarm function that drives me crazy! I'd really like to be able set the volume on the alarm independently of the volume for other functions (so I don't need to remember to adjust the volume setting before I go to sleep!).

Some comprehensive volume preferences in settings would allow everyone to get their phone to work the way that they want. If Apple believe that a certain configuration is better for most than other (as some people on this thread seem to think) then that could be the default setting.

Oh man OP, thanks for making me silently chuckle to myself in the library. People are staring at me now :p

Wait so I won't hear my alarm when my ringer is off??

A lot of you are very passionate when you don't know what you are talking about.

Silent switch is to prevent inadvertent noise like phone calls, text, emails, any notifications.

User activated media is dev dependent however generally favors making sound when the silent switch is on. This includes apples apps.

An example of an Apple app would be a video sent in messages. With the silent switch on it SHOULD (per Apples APIs) play sound. The same applies to voice recordings in the message app. Music app, video app. etc all the same.

An example of a 3rd party app that works perfectly is YouTube. Plays sound with the silent switch on. Again pretty obvious why, if YOU play a video the app assumes YOU want all that is included with that video.

An example of devs with poor implementation would be SnapChat. It will not play sound when with silent on. Its poor implementation because you only have so many seconds to see the video and then its gone. Silent switch on? You blew it! Lol

Anyway I still have sound with videos with the silent switch on in the apps I frequently use. Hulu Plus, HBOgo, YouTube, Apple's apps, Netflix, etc etc.

Exactly! Thank you. Why would anyone play a video if they didn't want to hear the sound? Plenty of people don't want to be pestered by constant ring/text sounds but still want the phone to play audio when they want it to, this is very simple. People will defend Apple no matter how wrong they are.

Great explanation! Thank you very much. This explains the inconsistent behaviour.

But like... I mean... yeah. Silent is silent for a reason. Not all apps do it, but I prefer it that way.
