When I start up my iMac, sounds sometimes do not work. My system preference sound settings and output volume are OK. Sounds usually work on restart. Does anyone have any idea why it sometimes takes a restart to get sounds to work?

What apps do you run that use audio? Some like to take over when they run.

Hi Mike. I recognize you from the Finale forum. I'm gogreen there.

The main app I use that uses audio is, of course, Finale, and, occasionally, VLC and Audacity.

    Hi Arthur,

Funny, I was going to suggest Finale as that does it with me sometimes. I've not used VLC since I got my iMac Pro.

Dragon Dictate is another app that likes to take over — often I cannot use any other app involving audio without a reboot.

If an app, then, prevents audio from working, is there a way to get it back without rebooting?
