No sound output while using input?

New to Mac's so please excuse this simple question.

While my system sounds play just fine I have a tape recorder plugged into my MBP input jack. I see the sound level moving in the sound controls area but my internal spearkers are not playing the sound. Before you ask, no I do not have the sound muted. 🙂

Any ideas? I feel foolish asking such a simple question but I'm pulling my hair out over this one.

Well, I thought this was a simple question with a simple solution. Guess I thought wrong. And here I thoght Mac's were supposed to be easier to use than PC's. hhhmmm...

Sorry for my frustration, but 25+ people viewing this and no resolution has me wondering.
