No sound?

Hey guys,
My MPB's sound just randomly stopped working today. The speaker icon on the top toolbar is grayed/faded (as if not turned on) but the sound is all the way up. I can't move the sound up or down, and when I press a sound button, there is an x under the speaker.
I have tried restarting and I made sure that the preferences were on the correct output setting.

Is there a red light coming from the headphone out? If so, repeatedly plug and unplug a 3.5mm plug until the red light shuts off, then the speakers should be back. And what does "System Preferences >>> Sound >>> Output" say?
