What are you using for speakers? On the Bose volume wheel, if you just tap the middle by mistake it mutes it...

There's a setting in System Preferences called "Play user interface sound effects". If this is disabled, sounds such as Empty Trash won't play.

Reset the PRAM. Command-Option-P-R on boot.
