Indeed it does. AirPlay does not care what network hardware is being used. As long as it can make a TCP/IP connection, it is happy.
Well, except for my Denon receiver. Airplay 2 works fine when I connect it over WiFi but it doesn’t show up when I connect it with Ethernet.

I have noticed the audio can be listened to in various formats. I switched my Apple TV to auto format and now listen to the spatial and Atmos signals in PCM 5.1. The sound is superb. Playing it through a Krell 4k and Krell 400 amps. Krell has automatic switching for formats detected. I have found with these mew formats it’s important to have good speakers. The output to the various channels are more dynamic than old mixed 5.1 surround sound.

It is in the beta and works VERY well. Even head tracking (watching video).
Hi there. Anybody can confirm that the spatial audio works in tvOS 15 beta also on Apple TV 4th gen (aka Apple TV HD)? Anybody with that ATV model has installed the beta and tried first-hand the feature? My doubt is related to the fact that for Music the Dolby Atmos is compatible only on Apple TV 4K up.
Thanks a lot

Spacial Audio was working just fine till today. Today I notice that Netflix updated their app and now it’s not working

When I’m with AirPods Max connected to Apple TV, Netflix no longer shows audio as 5.1 or Atmos and when I check AirPods Max options it says that the audio is Stereo.

Don’t know if this was on purpose or not but it’s a shame it was fantastic.

I hope that Netflix didn’t that on purpose but since they made, somehow, public that they don’t intend to support spacial áudio I wonder…

I start to suspect it’s on purpose. When I turn of the spacial audio, the audio below changes to “Multichannel available”. When I turn it on then changes to stereo.

I’m regretting having auto updates enable

Watched the Amazon movie "The Tomorrow War", last night. Probably the best I've heard, so far. Sounded very natural and realistic. In many, I can hear echo or reverb in the dialog, but this movie was very clear on my AirPods Max.

May I ask what generation of Apple TV do you own? 4th gen (HD) or 4K? Anybody has info if spatial audio works on ATV HD (4th gen)?

thx a lot

If you have hardware that supports Atmos, it works fine. Playing Spatial Audio from Apple Music to my Sonos Arc over eARC.

Spatial Audio is for AirPods & Beats, you can’t play it through speakers. Atmos and spatial audio is not the same thing

"Spatial Audio is a layer on top of Dolby Atmos that enables an even more immersive listening experience. Not only do you get a multitude of audio channels via Dolby Atmos, but you also get to move around inside this audio space."

So, yes, the addition of location changing the audio, that's only available for earphones.

But, Apple isn't really showing any difference in the Music app (Spatial vs Dolby Atmos) - people with receivers / speakers that support Atmos will enjoy the same sound experience but without the capability of the sound stage moving with them.

I have TVOS beta loaded on my Apple TV 4K, and am really enjoying the spatial audio through my AirPods Pro.

Has anyone yet compared the difference between the sound through AirPods Pro and AirPods Max? Thanks.

A few clarifications to help cut down on spatial audio FUD:

- "Spatial audio" is Apple's own label for immersive audio (in quotes because spatial audio a generic audio term Apple likely can't trademark)

- Dolby Atmos is one type of immersive audio which Apple is currently implementing for their spatial audio. However, they also support 5.1 and 7.1 as input for immersive audio. Moreover, there was a news report a while back about Apple working on their own immersive audio format for AR devices. So in theory, at some point in the future it's possible Apple may dump Dolby Atmos for another format to use for spatial audio, such as their own spin on MPEG-H 3D. (It's also interesting how Apple is implementing their own decoding algorithms for Dolby Atmos in AirPods Pros.)

- Head tracking is an Apple-specific feature that can be enabled or disabled in iOS settings. It does not change spatial audio content, it only "locks" the sound stage to a fixed location as perceived by the listener. Most useful for AR applications. I believe the main reason for Apple developing head tracking is for the upcoming rumored Apple glasses and AR apps. ;)

Just to see if it was ATV box related (it's not) I hit Pause, then turned my head perpendicular to ATV/TV and hit play. It was then "locked" to that position and when turn to face the screen it was almost all Left.

Isn't spatial audio specific to headphones only?
I.e. it is a method of creating surround-sound sensation out of two headphone transducers, using the HRTF technology?
Especially in Apple's context, I relate it exclusively to AirPod Pro/Max listening.

It is what ever in the hell Apple wants it to be and could change at any time. Spatial Audio is just the nomenclature Apple came up with and isn't an industry standard process or have any agreed upon meaning.

For instance Apple may update so a pair (or just 1) of HomePods (or possible future sound bar) will do Spatial Audio.

For instance Amazon's Echo Studio speaker has Atmos enabled.

So the correct question is: What does Apple mean by Spatial Audio?

No, it refers to immersive audio in general. Though Apple is heavily focused on AirPods and Apple Music because that's where the majority of listeners will be. (In comparison, relatively few users will have 7.1.4 or even 5.1.2 home theater systems required for true spatial audio via speakers)

Here's a support article showing how to listen to spatial audio with Dolby Atmos on your various Apple devices: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212182

Just marketing spin for immersive audio in general. Apple is currently using Dolby Atmos for this, but by calling it "spatial audio" they leave the door open to substitute their own home-brewed format down the road...

...and Amazon calls it 3D Audio. I bet Apple looked at what Dolby and Amazon (and others) called it and challenged to come up with a more "Apple" type name.

I have AirPods Max, but haven't really been using them with my ATV 4K (plus 15 beta) as the audio/video sync is so bad I can't stand watching anything. I don't even think it's an issue with the AirPods or spatial audio, but the ATV in general.

Yeah I’ve had sync issues, you’re not alone. Hopefully get fixed.

Oddly, Disney+ content is in sync with my AirPods Max, but Apple TV+ is not in sync.
