NO startup chime

Same here, M1 MBP. Seems to be a new bug introduced by 11.2.2 or 11.2.3.
Not a big thing, but the number of small bugs seems to be growing and growing since the release of Big Sur.
Just took some notes in the past weeks on which OS caused bugs disturb my workflows regularly and am now on 36(!) bugs. Maybe not every single one, but at least the vast majority of them caused by macOS Big Sur exclusively. List still growing and no claim for completeness. Each of them not a real blocker, but many of them are far more severe than a missing startup chime and together they make up significant lack of stability in macOS.
I still like the workflows and efficiency of macOS and prefer it over other operating systems, especially on the M1, but to say that it is still more stable than for example Windows 10 would just be a plan lie.

Well it makes you think ‘what the heck did I do’? So typical anymore. Thanks for your reply..... keeps my sanity.
Made sense in macOS 10.15.7 and earlier, as there has been no settings option for the startup chime.
Doesn't make any sense in macOS 11 and later, as Big Sur has a settings option for that (which the original poster already tried to no avail).
then seems worth trying, if the sound preference setting isn't changing anything...
I have seen a few other threads on this topic. A few people have had success with some of the responses mentioned here but, as a whole, the bug problem has remained.
Yep that is why I always send a bug feedback report to Apple. No guarantee of a fix
It’s been tried as someone mentioned and does not fix the chime in 11.2.3 and I tried it as well and it does not fix the problem.
The chime on mine stopped and I didn't even notice until I read this thread! I went into settings and toggled the setting OFF, exited settings, went back in and toggled it back ON.
Rebooted and got the chime. This is on 11.3 beta, so whatever the issue is at least just toggling the setting appears to get it working again on 11.3. When that'll be released to non-beta testers I don't know.

Interesting. I installed the 11.2.3 release last week and it was fine. A few days later it stopped. I did the same thing toggling the setting and doing the shutdown but it does not resolve it. Hopefully 11.3 will.
Try this:
If you have wired speakers, unplug them from the headphone jack, check that the built-in speakers are active, and restart. You should get a startup chime. Plug the wired speakers back in and restart, you should hear the chime through the speakers now.
If that doesn't apply, or doesn't work, here's the other steps I tried:
1. Update to most recent MacOS.
2. System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects Pane > Toggle 'Play sound on startup' off and back on.
3. Use "sudo nvram StartupMute=%00" in Terminal
4. Turn your Mac off, unplug for 10 seconds, plug in and start up.
5. Turn your Mac off, Start up again, and hold Command+Option+P+R...this will reset the NVRAM.

Problem is 11.3 broke this setting so it can’t be changed. Also the “StartupMute” nvram variable no longer does anything.

I used to have problems with my Mac saying "You shut down your computer because of a problem" every time I boot to MacOS. So I decided to reset my NVRAM and I realized the boot chime works again.

This worked for me, but the second time the laptop was turned on there was no sound again. Back to square one!
