Apple does charge sales tax in ALL 50 States, becuase Apple does business in one form or another in ALL 50 states. Just call and ask them, they are very glad to tell you. One person was good enough to point out that its do to their business presence in all states, and yes that is why.

Other businesses can and usually do at times for instance, there is a large furnature retailer in Albany New York that I often travel over state lines to buy from (Great Prices). They didnt used to charge Massachusetts, or other out of state residence sales tax becuase in most cases, the stuff had to be delivered because of size. This lead to the MA Att. Gen office filing complaints against them, now you get charged your states sales tax....Bummer!

Sooner or later, which totally sux, I bet that will be the case with all internet purchases. Keep voting for them "Dubbya's" and they will even start taxing for the number 12 inspection sticker on your Panties🙂!!!

Has anybody ever walked into an Apple store and asked a manager for a discount or free ram on the basis that you could order the computer from amazon or smalldog, etc. and save $150 in taxes? That seems like it would be worth a try.....

Doubt they would do it, since sales taxes are legally still are to be paid to most states in the form of use taxes, as mentioned above.

Apple DOES not charge TAX in every state. This is true for both their retail Mac store as well as the online store.

I think he meant they charge tax for every state that charges tax. For those like Oregon, that don't have a state tax, they don't.

Strictly speaking Apple don't charge any tax anywhere they are simply obliged to collect taxes charged by State Governments etc.

What about in DC? They don't have a store there and I'm not sure what they would have that would constitute a presence. I'm about to buy a PB and am thinking of having it shipped to VA if they charge tax in DC. It's 4% vs. 10%. I think I'll opt for the 4%.

As mentioned, a presence can be sales and/or support staff in a state/ or locality.

VA sales tax is 5%, and the DC tax rate is 5.75% on hard goods.
