Other No TouchID - Best other iPhone unlocking solutions?

Hi All,


OK, Covid is still here - Will still be wearing masks at times indoors etc.... And wanting to unlock the phones at the most inconvenient moments!


Hope you can also advise on the pros and cons, as well as tips for best success rates


I've been spoilt with the touch_id on the SE 2020 and have never used anything else to unlock my phone for ages, including the SE1 etc. Looking at the latest iPhone mini for the next phone - it does not have Touch_ID. Shame not on the side buttons etc.


Hope any collated comments here also helps others. I'm not sure if FaceID has improved lots since covid has hit etc.

I voted for apple watch but please read:

I have iPhone 11 Pro which is not having ”good enough FaceID - total BS IMHO from Apple” so Face ID with mask is not working. As a result I also own Apple Watch 7 (for health monitoring mostly) which gives me option to unlock phone. However when I pay with Apple Pay / Wallet / Open apps encrypted with Face ID using iPhone I have to type whole password which allows to unlock phone next to strangers (most of terminals are on the right, watch is on left arm).

iPhones 12+ have “modern FaceID - again BS” and allows to unlock the phone. I have no clue how it goes in terms of paying authorization (do you have to type password or it works like normal Face ID? ).

That sounds rubbish.

Amazed a tech company like apple has not got this sorted by now. Covid has been going on for ages

We have been lucky to not have to go out too much at all, but essential workers etc. need all the help they can get.

Can't I simply pay by Apple Watch swipe over terminal? That way I'd avoid having to unlock the phone altogether. Or am I missing. something?

I wish my mini 6 had Face ID but the Touch ID on the power button works pretty well.

Hmmmmmm….

Thinking about it, perhaps there’s not enough of a button on the iPhone mini, for a decent touch ID fingerprint!

I’m glad I’m not the only person to think the touch ID is a really nice thing to have during Covid.

I agree. It would have been nice to have Touch ID along with Face ID on the iPhone. I work in healthcare so I’m wearing a mask all day long and before they even brought in the unlock with Apple Watch feature it was PITA to unlock my phone. Even the unlock with Apple Watch isn’t perfect.

I upgraded from the mini 5 to the 6 and I was really sceptical about them moving the Touch ID to the power button. However it actually works really well and I’ve had no issue with it.

I find Face ID has slowed somewhat for whatever reason (iOS updates?). It used to be virtually instantaneous.

I’ve been very lucky in that case, I’ve got the latest iOS update, and the touch ID is still fine for me.

If you’re using the iPhone 13 models I’ve found that where your eyes look at make a huge difference. If you stare directly at the faceid camera (top edge of phone) it won’t unlock, but if you look down toward the middle/bottom of the screen it will. Particularly if you’re wearing progressive glasses

For single app use, like Music or Notes, set up guided access. You won’t have to unlock your phone, but you can also not leave the app.
