Was helping a friend with his 2010 17” MBP that had a bad hard drive. It would not boot. I plugged one of my clone drives in and booted with it and the ma nine was fine. Since I had a spare bare drive I loaded the OS on it and swapped it in. While the case was open I used some vann d air to clean out all the accumulated dust. Buttoned it up and powered back on but the screen is showing nothing. Unplugged and replugged the video connector on the logic board but no joy.

Any ideas of what to check next? What could have gotten messed up?

PRAM and SMC reset?

Can you see anything on an external monitor?
Tried the resets already. Only external monitor I have available is my Thunderbolt 17”. Not sure if the 2010qorks with it. Nothing shows up when I plug it in. I do have an older Cinema Display with dvi but don’t have a MDP to DVI adapter.

No sounds on boot. Nothing showing on screen. Tried with different lighting to see if it was just backlight out but can see anything.

Remove the bottom cover, disconnect the battery, remove all of the memory, and connect battery, and boot the machine. Hopefully, you'll hear a constant beeping sound to indicate there is no memory.

If it does make the beeping sound, disconnect the battery, insert one memory stick, and boot the machine.

I’ll give that a try but it will be some time as I’m out of town. Not a huge rush since he can use his wife’s Mac or his iPad. They’re retired so it’s light use anyway.

Took out memory, restarted and got the beeping. Reinstalled memory and get same results. Plugged it into an external monitor and get nothing on either display.
