I'm a new iPod touch user. Neither had an iPt nor iPhone before. Just 2 Nanos.

I came across the iPt when I had to decide, whether to get the original Sonos control for my zone player or the iPt. Since the Sonos-App is absolutely equivalent if not superior to the original control, the decision wasn't all too hard.

I got an iPt now. Was really looking forward for it to arrive just to realise that there are no worthwhile Apps. At least I didn't find any yet. Except of the Sonos-App which is really great!

The preinstalled apps are ok, Safari and Mail are great, iBooks is awsome. But besides that there was nothing which made me even consider to install. Tried out 2 random games with 4+ stars rating which were boring as ****.
    Other games look even worse.

Didn't want it for games anyway. So I checked out all categories of most downloaded apps which are pretty limited (100 per category?). What about the several thousands of apps which are supposedly in the appstore. You can't even browse the appstore except of most downloaded. The only way to find the rest of the apps is only by searching for keywords which is pretty much a gamble.

I don't like the font of the Notes app, which for some reason you can't configure, so I tried to find a decent text editor or an alternative notes app. Guess what there is none, at least for my standards.

Overall I got the feeling that the majority of the appstore consists of junk-apps and light-versions and what not. Even the commercial apps are too limited and not even worth the little money they cost.

I'm really disappointed after reading so much about the "great" apps of the iOS and now I can't find them.

Without a question the iPt is a nice gadget and definitely worth its money to me, alone because of the Sonos-App. I guess my expectations on the "legendary" appstore were much to high.

What apps are you looking for?

If you don't want it for games that's fine. I rarely play games on mine and mostly use Safari, mail, and listening to music.

The apps I picked are things I like and frequent a lot on safari but prefer the apps b/c it's quicker to access.

You get apps for things you like to do but have it in app form...
Like to aim chat? download the aim app. Like to blog? download a blog app. Like to listen to the radio? download pandora or iheartradio app. Like tweeting or just reading tweets download a twitter app you like. Like to read the news? download a news app....

Wow - don't know where you're coming from exactly. I have about 30 apps, all of very high-quality, and the App Store is thee place to be. Enough said. ;)

It is hard to search for apps through Itunes. I use the appshopper.com website.

I agree with you up to a point...

There are ~250,000 apps on the app store and I installed ~25 that I thought were worthwhile for my iphone...0.01% -> so, 99.99% of the apps are not worth anything to me. ...but I still consider the apps I do have to be very much worth my while.

Without GPS or a cellular data connection I'd expect apps for the iPT to be significantly less worthwhile. You bought a music player - if not games then what else did you expect do with it other than play music and look at websites on a tiny screen?

keep browsing the app store, you will find plenty of things that are junk and a few gems that will do what you want.

About 99% of the apps are not great. There's nothing like what you find on a mac or pc, except maybe google maps, lol. Iphone's have better apps, because with the always on data connection, push alerts become really helpful (espn scorecenter and instant messaging for example).

There's a lot of music radio apps, police radio, facebook, twitter, and instant messaging apps. Most of these apps are not unique to the iphone/ipod and can be found on many platforms. Other than that, there are games, and nothing even close the quality on consoles or computers. So you bought a nice music player, with a few extras.

If you're trying to keep track of finance, keep a workout log, get your news on the run, remember your events and tasks, or need a good dictionary, then some of the apps are invaluable. I enjoy a few of the games, like online chess, online strategy war games (Galcon and UniWar), and simple time killers like Dead Runner.
