No YouTube HDR in Safari on new M1 Pro Display

Just want to confirm that there is no selection to play HDR videos in Safari right now, at least on my new 16" M1 Pro MBP, although Chrome does allow it. Pro Motion is also not working in either Safari or Chrome, and 60 fps is smoother in Chrome.

Pro Motion seems to be working in other apps like Messages and Photos, though. The difference is very noticeable.

Hoping for a fix soon!

UPDATE: It turns out I had "Optimize Video Streaming While On Battery" under "Battery" in "System Preference" turned on. Turning it off bought back HDR in YouTube. And yes, I was running my MacBook on battery.

These screens are not 120Hz. If you go to the setting for refresh rate it says 60Hz and promotion. It's a software trick. If the screens supported 120Hz that would be an actual option. Obviously nobody here has a high refresh rate monitor. A really 120Hz display is always 120Hz. Not 120Hz in photos but not safari. Lol.

lol what.

The screen is 120hz. There is no software trick to increase refresh rate, it's just subjective to the content and is not running all the time at 120 hz.

what? safari on 13 pro is really smooth. pro motion is in effect on safari 13 pro. this is more of an issue with testufo not playing well on safari browser from what it looks.

youtube HDR does work on chrome / safari. it doesn't specifically say HDR in the playback options

Something must be wrong with your setup. Youtube HDR works fine for me in Safari - it says HDR on the quality "cogwheel" too

Scrolling is not handled by apps — it is automatically handled by CoreAnimation framework so even pre-ProMotion era apps can use the feature.

However, the Safari rendering engine (WebKit) does not support 120Hz animations. There is no way for web developers to support 120Hz content (besides playing videos, which is handled by AVFoundation) in Safari.

gotcha. makes sense, i recall that was the one 'limitation' (i wouldn't consider it as such) with pro motion implementation.

i'm still miffed about pro motion not functioning correctly such as scrolling. i feel like i'm using an old LCD monitor when it comes to blur when scrolling.

I found the culprit: I had "Optimize Video Streaming While On Battery" under "Battery" in "System Preference" turned on. Turned it off now and walls....it's working again!

And yes, I was running my Mac on battery LOL.

Safari is horrible I thought pro motion with help the scrolling the iPad Pro is butter smooth; also hdr video isn’t any better compared to older intel macs

In review videos you could tell the difference. It's massive even watching via an old MBA display. Check the new Max Tech video comparing the 16inch Intel vs M1 PRO...

And safari and chrome etc not being 120fps is a bug that is being worked on all browsers AFAIK.

Again this is a new display (pro motion 120fps) on a MacBook. It is normal to have some bugs or quirks since we're considered first adopters. It'll get fixed and it'll be fine in time :)
