Hello everyone I'm new here,

I recently swapped out my HDD for a Samsung 500GB SSD on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) running Mojave 10.14.1 and I've noticed something weird that I can't find an answer to online.

1. When waking up from sleep it makes a noise (I know SSD's aren't supposed to make a noise but this didn't happen before) I found a video on YouTube with someone having the same issue with the exact same noise here.

2. Also on waking in addition to the noise the screen is black and white and it appears to have a loading bar, I see my desktop (wallpaper, icons, everything) it's just in black and white. I hear the noise, the loading bar completes and then it's fine.

I've tried resetting the SMC but that didn't help. The OS is also up to date.

I'm all out of ideas so if anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

Weird because I used a Samsung 840 EVO and 850 EVO in a mid-2012 13" MBP with 8 GB of ram. The loading bar is normal when it restores the ram contents from the SSD after waking from hibernation. I've never encountered this in either MBP. I've also installed SSDs in 2010 and 2011 MBPs, both 13" and 15".

Did you try a nvram reset?

Hi,

Thanks for replying, this really is weird. I haven't tried a NVRAM reset yet but I'll give that a shot. The computer's super fast now, and I don't really have any complaints this is more of an oddity that has peaked my curiosity. I just want to figure out why it's happening. As for the loading bar it's not really a loading "bar" per se it looks kind of like this (obviously doesn't say volume lol):

This is what is called Safe Sleep. If you Mac battery is drained you will see this issue occur with the newer systems with your MacBook Pro being one of those.

Listening to the noise in the video it sounds like the super drive repositioning components for reading a disc, even though a disc is not in the super drive.

Does the bar progress from left to right by adding more vertical bars from left to right before the login screen appears? If yes, that's normal from what I have seen.

Is it normal to enter safe sleep even when plugged in? The battery wasn't even close to being drained.

The progress bar shows up just from me opening the macbook, I don't see a login screen because it goes directly to the desktop but the desktop is in black and white. I hear the noise and see the progress bar going from left to right. When it finishes everything goes back to color and all is normal.

As for the super drive repositioning, is there anything that can be done? It's not really a problem though, just curious.

It possible that the MacBook is bypassing the log in screen and taking you directly the desktop?

Yes, the MacBook can enter hibernation even when connected to a power source. Check the MacBook's hibernation settings.

Are you sure it's not a bit of fan noise?

I tried setting hibernatemode to 0 and I tried deleting the sleepimage as well but it wouldn't allow me to do so even as root.

To see if it really is the superdrive making the noise as suggested above, disconnect it from the MacBook and try it.

And unless you use a lot of DVDs leave it out. Or stick another SSD in it's place. You can get an external USB housing for the DVD drive for $15 or so from Amazon

UPDATE:

So a friend of mine asked me to help him with his Macbook Pro that was really slow so I did the same thing I did on mine. Swapped out the HDD for the same SSD and I also put in 8GB of RAM. I reset the SMC as well. At first, I noticed the same exact problem, the same noise and the safe sleep thing happening as well. The only difference is his was still running El Capitan and when I went into terminal to set hibernatemode to 0 and delete the sleepimage it worked and no more noise, and no more safesleep. As for my macbook it is up to date and apparently it won't allow me to delete the sleepimage.

I listened to the sound posted by the OP in post 1.

That's the sound the internal DVD drive makes when it "wakes up".

I wouldn't worry about it -- not for 3 seconds.
Not at all.
