noisy audio from macbook to stereo

hey all,

i have a small 2.1 speaker stereo system with RCA outs where i use my macbook. i have an adapter that turns the two RCA (red/white) cables into one headphone size jack, and that goes in my macbook.... but the signal is pretty noisy when i put the stereo at a reasonable volume (not loud, just reasonable 🙂). is there anything i can do reduce the noise?
