My iPhone 5 recently suffered a mishap and had to be replaced. After being on iPhones since iPhone 2 I was interested in something different, and cheaper, (insurance, wished I had it).

I bought a Nokia Lumia 925 running Windows 8, and I have to say, I really kind of like it! It's a bit of a chore learning how to do things in a new way, but it's kind of cool. And my kids can't keep their hands off of it.

Anyone else have experience with these phones or Windows Phone 8?

I have a 520 and 1520 and my wife has the 1020. You have to find 3rd party apps that equate to iOS or Android, but so far it hasn't been much of an issue for me. I like the 1520, because I get 3 rows of tiles, instead of 2 on every other Lumia phone. Makes fitting everything on the screen much easier.

There are a few of us WP users on this site, so if you need any advice on apps, I'm sure one of us will be able to help you out. Enjoy the 925. :D

Some things are different, some are non existent but overall it isn't terrible. There are some annoyances but they should be fixed over time

    dsnort,

I was in a similar position to you a couple of months ago (long time iPhone user, suffered a malfunction of the phone) and also got the 925. I thought there were several really nice things about WP and the handset, but in the end I decided I didn't want to live with a few limitations. My thoughts are here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=18489690&postcount=8

I'm trying Android now for the first time since around 2008/2009 and finding it a better fit for me. For the last 4 years I've been happy to accept the high cost of iPhones because alternatives seemed a bit of a risk to me. But I think its unlikely I'm going to accept the high cost again. I now see that both Android & WP are very capable (and crucially, stable) even at low price points.

Just an update. I was okay with Windows Phone 8, a little limited, but overall, okay. Some things I liked better something's I learned to live with. Until Saturday, when I was stuck in traffic and unable to communicate because my phone locked up, it locked up, it locked the ****up! Features are okay, but reliability trumps all.

What do you mean by 'locked up'? To me, that means a simple reboot. Unless you mean it somehow bricked itself for no reason?

A simple force reset may have solved it. Hold down power and volume down until it vibrates and then restarts...

Almost all phones and tablets can do this hence they all have hard / force reset button configs. Apple it's power and home key. Devices with removable battery's it usually is a battery pull.

Also one incident doesn't equate to the whole being unreliable.
