don't get 3gs now, it's old and will be surprised if it's not phased out by Apple in 2012 similar to the 3g before it. Get the Lumia

Windows Phone 7 is not bad at all. Have you ever tried it?

Defenitely go for the Lumia. New hardware, has also an 8 MP camera.
WP7 is not bad at all indeed, but still no match for iOS in terms of functionality. Windows Phone is like iOS 2 featurewise, no need to go back three years in time just because it is something different.

If you listen to music on a separate device it probably doesn't really matter, but if you use the phone as your on the go media player then i have read and heard some user complaints about poor audio performance of the lumia. Which is indeed disappointing coming from Nokia which had made some nice music phones in the past.

Nokia Lumia, no question. Better hardware than the 3GS, Windows Phone 7 is an excellent OS, and the Lumia will be supported for at least a couple of years, while Apple is probably going to drop the 3GS whenever the next major version of iOS comes out.

Too late I know, but for me the 3GS would be worth it just to be in the Apple ecosystem alone. The 3GS is a fantastic handset, and still very much functional today. I'd look at it from the point of view that I'd want it to work with all my Apple stuff, sync with iCloud, and generally not give me any hassle.

Megapixels don't matter, you need to compare how they do in different lighting including low light. I would choose WP7 if I were to get rid of my iPhone; Android feels like too much of a lateral move without any significant benefits.

Should I get a Nokia lumia or a :apple: iPhone 3GS it's realy hard, spec wise the lumia beats the 3GS Hands down! But I have a iPad and have owned 2 iPod touches so I'm well used to the IOS software and love iCloud. I have also spent over £100 on apps and I would to have to buy more again! The lumia is an amazing phone, for some it's in the same legue as the 4s I also have to keep the phone on a contract for 2 years so I'm woried that the 3GS is not future proof. The lumia has a better contract with unlimited Internet were the iPhone has 1gb.
The lumia will possibly support tethering in the future but the iPhones network wont let you theather, it's not a big thing but it would be nice to be able to do it with the iPad.
I'm confused! HELP!!!

Nokia Lumia 800/900 all the way.
Funny enough this question is hilarious here, as everyone will vote for the 3GS (sigh).

why would anyone want to be tied into an Apple ecosystem? Competition is good. If you can get cheaper mp3's and ebooks from Amazon do that! Microsoft has skydrive which backs up photos and docs to the clouds syncing across all devices and yes even macs and you get 25gn free. If the OP has a mac, he can sync his lumia 800 with iTunes using the Windows Phone sync software from the app store.

This thing is amazing!!!!

This phone is amazing! It's interface is realy smooth and nice to use, all the things that you would normally use are realy quick easy to use. The calling quality is gr8 and the speeker phone is loud. The video quality is fantastic and the camera works realy well. Everything is set out perfectley. The only down side is that the battery dosent last long cuz I'm constantly using it!!:)

If he just bought the T-Mobile Nokia then he got the 710. Shame shame.

No I'm not in America for some reason it seams you get all the duff deals, in the uk we can get a free iPhone on any network we like, where america charge $200 and only 3 networks!
BTW I'll say it again I have got the 800. :p

Glad to see you got it. Are you satisfied with your choice of apps? That's the big thing keeping me off Windows Phone.

It realy depends what you normally use but most things are on the maketplace, also now Nokia have joined WP, advertising in the uk has exploded so expect one of the quickest expanding app stores

I was glad to see red laser on there as well, get one you won't be disappointed!

I would get a Lumia tbh if you can't get at least an iPhone 4. WP7 is really fluid too.

indeed the iphone 4 is a solid phone and should be a perfect compromise between price and specs/experience. otherwise there's no comparison you should go for the lumia 800/900.

the 3GS has really had its time you will be sorry if you buy it.

did you see argos had the Lumia 800 for £120 unlocked and without contract. massive savings from £449

I have a Lumia 800. Would I recommend it over a 3GS? Yes. Would I recommend it over an iPhone 4 or 4S? No.

Coming from an iPhone, here's some things to keep in mind:

Software

- Windows Phone OS (particularly the live icons and focus on your contacts/friends) feels like something from the future in a way. It reminds me a lot of those past Bill Gates keynotes from CES, but actually here today.

The Metro UI and its focus on social, does make the iOS springboard feel old and outdated.

However ...

- Outside of the actual OS and Microsoft's own applications, the Metro experience diminishes rapidly. This is particularly evident in some of Nokia's own applications including the Nokia Drive app.

- App Marketplace is sorely lacking "good" free applications and paid applications are rather expensive compared the iOS App Store.

For example, EA's Monopoly is $0.99 on the iOS App Store and $4.99 on the Windows Phone Marketplace. This isn't isolated to EA either.

- Sound level choices are weird (at least on my Lumia 800). There are 20+ different sound levels and even the bottom levels are really loud.

Hardware

- Build quality is better than most plastic non-iPhone phones and every Windows Phone I've used, but it's not iPhone 4/4S quality.

- Power button is located in the middle of the right side of the phone. I found this placement odd and annoying since it's easy to accidentally put the phone in standby.

- Display, while gorgeous from a distance, is a pentile matrix display and color separation is visible.

Apparently, the Lumia 900 will not have a pentile matrix display.

Edit: Looks like you got the 800, congrats.
