Popular accessory maker Nomad today announced the launch of three new products that are designed for use in vehicles. The Mount, Charge Mount, and 70W Car Charger offer charging and mounting solutions for the car.

Priced at $45, the Mount is a simple MagSafe-compatible accessory that is designed to attach to horizontal and vertical vehicle vents. It features a slim design with a polycarbonate and glass body. As this is just a mount, it does not offer in-car charging.

The $80 Charge Mount has the same design as the Mount, but it comes with a USB-C cable and an 18W USB-C Car Charger. It is able to charge an iPhone at up to 7.5W and it works with any of the MagSafe iPhones.

Nomad's $60 70W Car Charger plugs into the 12V socket in the car and offers two USB-C ports for charging iPhones and even Macs. The full 70W is available to a single device if only one USB-C port is in use, otherwise the power is split between the two devices (50W to the blue port and 20W to the other port). The Car Charger features GaN technology for a slim build, but it does not come with USB-C cables so you will need to supply your own.

All of the new car accessories can be purchased today from the Nomad website.

What a non-sense carplay marketing photo.

Simply because the cars with wireless carplay also have wireless charging, so no need for this thing.

And the cars without wireless carplay requires a cabled iPhone for carplay to work, and that cable charges already.

A very niche product that just serves very old cars without a display, unlike the one from the photo on top.

Who wants to buy an overpriced 7.5W wireless charger when you can get a real MagSafe 15W charger? If you don’t have real MagSafe then you’re not going to charge much while using navigation and Bluetooth. I know the wireless pad on my Telluride X-Pro only does 7.5W while driving and it’s barely enough to keep up with my wireless CarPlay dongle.

I’m really over Nomad and their overpriced crap.

Certainly for cars without CarPlay/built-in Nav. Still lots of those on the roads. Also it’s useful for people using CarPlay dongles on wired cars (🙋‍♂️) but that’s definitely niche market.

Very old car? Our car from 2017 has none of this, especially back then when it was never even offered. I would say this product will be phased out eventually. But unless you consider 2017 a very old car, lots of cars can make use of this.

I have wireless CarPlay and (utterly slow) crappy wireless charging and still use a similar USB-C magnetic charger mounted to the vent, simply because some Apps do not use CarPlay and I like to have the second screen for route information or for voice-to-text-applications like DayOne (which definetly should work with CarPlay, by the way). So these can be useful if you need faster charging and a way of having the iPhone in view.

Yeah very old was a bit exaggerated, a older car! 😘
But the ad photo is still non-sense with a Subaru Outback 2022/2023 which has wireless charging/USB and CarPlay build-in.

Vent attachment mounts are useful for lighter phones, but don’t support heavier ones adequately; they’re also flawed in their design because during winter months, heat comes out of those events, which can cause your phone to overheat and shut down during use.

It usually breaks or at least scratches the fins.
I wouldn't glue anything anywhere too, because with time and sun the surface changes its color and the part below the sticker will remains newer with a darker color. A wonderful permanent darker dot you get there :D

Why are actual 15W MagSafe accessories so rare? Even from companies that charge an arm and a leg?
Because they'd rather pocket the money that Apple charges to be MagSafe certified, and most consumers won't know or care about the number of watts their device charges at.

Depends on the trims offered in your country. I know that the 2023 Outback base Convenience trim in Canada does not have wireless CarPlay nor the wirless charging pad.

I have wireless charging in my car but bought a MagSafe holder from Amazon. Otterbox I think. It wasn't so expensive like Nomad. I use a USB-C cable to charge my iPhone. I have a small 60W 12V socket adapter (from Amazon) with USB-A & C, and it charges my phone faster than it will with MagSafe. Magsafe is easier than plugging in and out but cables will be hanging still around. If I was still using my old car, I would have built in Magsafe on the dashboard.

My car has a compartment with a built-in QI charger. It’s not nearly so good as MagSafe, though, and is barely enough to keep the iPhone charged on a long trip.

Yup, glue is not a great solution either. Hate to say it, but my Dad's cup holder stand is probably the best you can do 😉

Nomad provides great accessories but it’s not fast enough to launch in time for new Apple products. I usually end up buying whoever launches in time for each debut

I’ve also had mixed results with the quality of Nomad’s chargers in the past. One wireless charger didn’t work right and had to be replaced. Not sure if that was a common issue or not. Love their cases and watch bands though!

We have one too, but since we have wired CarPlay, we just bought a 12" shorty USB cord, plug it in and put it in the cubbyhole for QI, which is right under the USB ports. Charges fast and works at the same time!

Because you have to buy an Apple provided chip and that eats all the profit. I don't have actual numbers but from what I've heard and what the market seems to indicate, it's not cost effective to be fully certified with all the parts, hence it's essentially only Apple that offers it.

Bit late out the gate with these doodads. Pretty much all cars 10-12 years old have USB ports. Most cars 6 years old or so have Apple CarPlay. But I guess they might come in handy in my '69 Camaro on Car Club nights at Superdawg!
Only if you’re looking for something to destroy your vent slats with.
