I was able to make a down payment when I got my next upgrade.
Interesting. I guess AT&T stores are more flexible. I always buy online and making a downpayment with AT&T Next wasn't an option. Granted, since it's a 0% interest loan, there's not much sense in putting a downpayment, anyhow.

Someone correct me on my math but from what I have seen on the macrumors and other various tech websites its really not a bad deal now that AT&T reduced the price of having a phone off contract

A lot of us are still on unlimited plans, and there is no discount for not using an upgrade there. The Next monthly fee would simply add to your monthly bill. The mobile share plans would also be significantly more expensive based on the amount of data used on my plan. I know that's not true for everyone, and a lot of people switched.

Thanks b1llj0hn for the tip about using Apple's site. The date does show there when making a phone purchase. It is weird that AT&T no longer gives the date for future eligibility on their site.

They do. If you log into your account (desktop view) then click on the "I want to" drop down menu, choose manage my profile then update my profile and choose the user information tab it will list all lines on your account and under contract section it will display your end date. I hope this helps.

I have 5 lines on my family plan (non mobile share). Only one line is eligible for an upgrade. The one that is eligible says this:

Congratulations! You are eligible for an AT&T NEXT installment plan upgrade. Or, get a standard upgrade today with a 2-year service agreement and a $36 upgrade fee.

All others just say eligible for AT&T NEXT..no date for standard upgrade.

I BELIEVE I remember them saying in the store that if you do it online or at a non company store (AT&T authorized dealer) that they could not take down payments. I could be just remembering wrong too. They suggested if you wanted to make a larger payment that way to get a AT&T gift card for the amount, and then use that to pay at an auth dealer or online and it would come off your bill but not necessarily the amount owed on the phone.

Every Check eligibility button I click says I am eligible for Next. That is sort of the problem. Didn't know if anyone knew of some back door. They are really pushing Next.
There is a way but it is very convoluted now. I had a rep walk me through it but it is now longer simple to do as before.

I'm a Premier (corporate discount) customer, so maybe my upgrade check is a bit different.

I sign on to my account, click "Check upgrade eligibility" on the middle of my screen (under my current device), it takes me to "Phone and Device Selection," I click "Buy iPhone 6," and it displays both 2-Year Commitment and No Annual Contract prices. Since I've had my current phone for more than 6 months, the 2-Year price reflects the Early Upgrade price ($200 discount).

AT&T explains the process here.

The "User Information" tab under "My Profile" will show the Contract end date. My contract ends on 9/12/16, so I'm a bit puzzled that on the "Phone and Device Selection" page, it says, "This line may be eligible for a greater discount on 04/13/2016."
