We will know if apple plans to release more iPods this year by if they change the current black iPod touches to space gray.

It's more of a SciFi Spaceship Grey ... but I don't think thats all that marketable.

I agree - since Apple introduced the colour name with the iPhone 5s, i've taken it to be a description of a grey associated with space – not describing space as grey.

Think of the hull of some ships (or interiors) in Star Wars, or various other on screen science-fiction spaceships.

It's also a reference to Apple's older colour naming schemes from when they used translucent plastics e.g. for the iMacs, and used descriptive colour names for them such as grape, tangerine etc.

They already did this :)

interested to see if there are any other changes to the non retina space gray ipad.

On this topic does anyone have an idea when the retina mini ipad will start showing up in stores? do they show up like a few days before they are released for sale?

You're a bit late ;), the new space gray iPods were released the same day as the september keynote, and the answer to your question, no they will not release new iPods this year.

Missing Black

Anyone else sad they seem to be phasing out the black color? I saw the "space grey" iPhone 5S in person yesterday and was really disappointed. I like my black iPhone 5. And I would kill to see color come to the macbook line. A charcoal black Macbook Pro? Dear god.

price is too high for the old mini,I've seen some retailers recently selling the old mini for cheaper.(not the new space fray color).

on the positive note, the space gray looks way better than that ugly, boring slate/black of last year.I hated that color, you could barely see the Apple logo, and the that shade made the product looked so generic.(on both iPhone and iPad mini)
it's good to see apple realised that and ditched slate/black on all their products.

that's being said,I'd personally go for silver/white mini 2.

Any clue on how they color the aluminum? Is it a spray?

it's anodized. look it up. better scratch resistivity than painting/spraying (former Titanium PowerBook users know this). though if it gets really heavy (like the slate iPhones) it gets more scratch prone.
