I tried searching and got even more confused about exactly what is needed to upgrade my 5th gen iPod. I would like a bigger internal HD, 250 or 500, change out the battery and if possible changing out the front and rear casing and possibly the click wheel. Which HD should I go with? Also how would I go about formatting it with a macbook air with only USB inputs? Appreciate the expert help

Since you are using a Mac product, it would be formatted as mac journaled. If it was Windows PC, it would be Fat32.

Thanks guys. Based on this:
https://www.iflash.xyz/runtime-shootout-dual-sdxc-msata-sdxc-and-original-hard-drive/

An sdxc card writes and reads at 23/14 mb per sec. Is it safe to assume we can get a cheaper card with a lower write and read speed and it will perform fine?
Hey I´ve got a Tarkan´s iFlash adapter +128 SDXC Qumox card working nicely in a (former) 80 GB 5.5. If I were you I would get a dual iFlash +2 SDXC . Add a 2000 mAh battery as I have and you will have a lightweight never-ending battery iPod with lots of room for stuff. :) Haven´t tried other cards from the Tarkan recommended cards list but this one is cheap and performs well.

I've just bought the Tarkan iFlash dual adaptor, waiting for it to arrive. And just got a pair of 128gb Kingston SD cards to go with it. Hoping to get a decent working iPod, that can hold a semi-reasonable amount of WAV music. 30gb really isn't enough...

Will update once its installed and up and running!

Boom, double post!

Fitted the SDXC cards and board last night. Was a bit of a nightmare to get the iPod open initially. I ended up breaking the spludger I was using, and worked the rest of apart with some guitar picks and a small flathead driver. Its well worth looking at the iFixIt guide on where the tabs on the front casing are, but its fairly easy to feel them once you've got something in.

With my iPod (5.5 30gb), I used one black foam pad (included with the adaptor) to make sure it didn't rattle around inside the casing.

The battery cable again, was a little bit of a nightmare, and the first time I put it back together, I didn't seat the cable correctly, so I got the Low Power error on the screen, but taking it out and re-seating the connector fixed that. I would highly recommend not clipping the iPod back together until you've ensured that its recognised by iTunes.

Once it was all working. I clipped it back together, and re formatted the iPod with iTunes, I was a little worried about the SD cards not being the correct format, but iTunes seemed to sort it out.

I went with a pair of 128gb Kingston SD cards.

Its now working great! Syncing lossless files (WAVs) took a really long time, so I left it going overnight.

So far, it seems good! Battery life seems the same, if not a little better. Its also much much quicker to turn on, and find files, no more waiting a few seconds to start playing!

Highly recommend the Tarkan adaptor, only took a few days to arrive, and superb quality!
