Hey guys, i ran SMC fan on my 2009 MBP for the last 3 years and its been perfect. I always need it when i go to egypt since the weather is so hot, the fan has to be maxed out all the time.

Anyways, I just got my 2012 cMBP 15" yesterday, and when i installed SMC fan, it always shows the Temp as ZERO.

PS: iStat is showing the correct temperatures.

Did you download SMC from the developers page or how did you installed? It may be a version that doesn't support that model. Be sure you've got the latest version. If you do, then it still doesn't have support for your Mac. Although I'm pretty sure the latest version is already out.

i downloaded it from their website, and even checked for updates, i currently have version 2.3.

any special way it should be installed. (last time it worked). This time the fan speed change is working, but not the temp. indicator.

SMC Fan Control is presently in need of an update for the latest generation of MacBook Pro`s. Control over the fans will work, however the temp sensor wont be found. Bresink`s Temperature Monitor is about the most reliable at present, having recently being updated.

i wouldn't hold too many hopes for SMC Fan Control, as it has not been updated in some time, 2.3 islatest and potentially final. Search fro UltraFan an app by one of our own forum members, it`s still in beta, however extremely promising.

Thanks guys for the input. I ended up getting "Temp monitor" and just had SMC fan show me the fan speed only instead of fan speed and temp.

smcFanControl or UltraFan (which made by MacRumors' user)

Which should be use?

They have differing purpose; SMC Fan Control increases the minimum threshold for your fans, so you can up from average default of 2K to say 3.5K adding additional cooling. You can add presets and power profiles.

UltraFan aims to control system temperature via a preset temperature value by increasing and decreasing fan rpm, the app now also has manual override of ran rpm, similar to SMC Fan Control.

For me UltraFan is the better app, however it is still in Beta and this must be respected. SMC Fan Control has been around a long time is well proven and a finalised application. I tend to use both depending on circumstance, however i am swaying more & more to UltraFan as it is in continuous development with feedback directly from forum members.
