The original could have poor contacts, it could have a small crack in the electronics or a contact somewhere, it could be last year's model...I've personally seen a new SIM chip help on more than one carrier. It's always worth a try.

Yeah, I know a few people that thought they had problems with their phones but actually the problem was with their sim cards.
