The watch plus CycleMeter would make for a killer bike computer strapped to handlebars if it would stay lit.

Apple could add this at any time, like 1.1. Apple's #1 concern was to avoid having all the web sites reporting about how poor the battery life was. This would have been an out the gate killer. Now that Apple has passed that hurdle we will start to see battery eating things added like maybe a custom time out for the display.

I think Julien is spot-on correct. The public's perception on battery life is critical at this stage. I think we'll see more control of battery usage in v2 and beyond. To all of us here, it seems like the Apple Watch has been out for awhile and we know a lot about it, but it will be awhile before the general public is at the same level of familiarity as we are. For that reason, I don't think we'll see the ability to better control the usage of the battery until v2 or beyond.

Highly agree! Should be customizable. I definitely believe it is too short. I usually have 55% battery left at the end of the day, and would happily lose some of that for a longer time-out period.

Baffles me that people are so quick to give up on the watch due to some software feature they don't like.

Am I the only one that eagerly awaits software improvements while enjoying the product as is in the meantime?

I agree, the watch screen does turn off too quickly. I really don't have battery issues.

I actually for the first time ever made feedback on Apple's website, suggesting that perhaps a dim screen instead of a blank screen. My battery life is 50 to 40% at the end of the day with pretty good usage on watch.

I suggest that everyone who has the same issue or feels the same to leave feedback. Apple actually does read these.
