I bought my IP8 from att.com on preorder, paying the full price. Today I tried the unlock procedure and got the following message below. The IMEI number I got from Setting/General/About is the same number that I get from entering *#06#

"The IMEI you entered does not appear to be an AT&T wireless phone or tablet. Please re-enter the correct 15-digit IMEI number for your AT&T wireless phone or tablet. You can obtain the IMEI number from the wireless phone by dialing *#06#."

I should note that when I received this phone, I had problems activating it. Since I wanted to use it immediately, I just switched the sim card from my previous phone and from that point on, it worked fine. By doing this, did I in effect make this new phone a non sim phone with ATT assuming I still was using my previous phone and this one is not activated?

My reason for wanting to unlock this phone is that I’m considering ordering the X to replace this phone, which I may then want to sell. I would like to know what the status of this phone is before I trot into my local ATT store to ask them.

Call AT&T and see if they can help you.
They are totally useless and will go out of their way not to assist you when it comes to unlocking iPhones though. Just so you know.
After a few calls if you see you're not getting anywhere just go straight to bbb.com and file a complaint. That's what's usually needed to get things done with them.

Thanks to all. I'm going to drop into a ATT store tomorrrow. I wanted to buy from Apple, but on preorder day I had 2 computers running, one to ATT and the other to Apple. The ATT store opened first online and the old "bird in the hand worth 2 in the bush" seemed to be the way to go. I almost dumped ATT, but was afraid I might lose the connection to Apple online.

Re requesting ATT to unlock paid phones hasn't been a problem for me the past year or two.

Thanks again for all the imputs...

UPDATE: Went into my local ATT store and found the phone was not totallly registered with ATT. Got a new sim card and now I'm waiting for the answer to my unlock request.

Less than 24 hours later, received the "good to go" for unlocking my IP8 from ATT.
