We don't have an Apple Store, and none of the AT&T stores here had the 6s plus. Plenty of 6s. They don't seem to make enough of the plus phones. I wanted gold, but didn't feel like driving 5 hrs to an Apple Store. I'll get one eventually.

This is just from my personal experience in my area, about an hour outside of Pittsburgh, but I work for a major wireless carrier and noticed that we didn't sell out of iPhone's this year like we do every year. Apple sent us 35 iPhone 6s devices and I only did one iPhone 6s upgrade today. I sold various other devices throughout the day, but definitely wasn't expecting this.

Last year at launch we got the same amount of phones and sold out within an hour.

Keep in mind that I work for a bigger corporate location in my area too.

Just wondering if the general public just isn't as impressed with the new iPhone's to justify an upgrade or what is going on. I know we are tech nerds who always have to have the latest and greatest, but to the average layman, maybe this just isn't worth the cost? I'm baffled.

What are your guys thoughts and what happened in your area of the woods? Did you see a lot of people in your local carrier offices getting the new devices or not so much? Do you think it's because of the Apple Upgrade Program?
Apple upgrade program plus last year was iPhone 6 and this year is a S model. S model does not do much good than their predecessors.

In the US, there haven't been pre-orders for new iPhones in two years. The last time you could pre-order before launch day was the iPhone 5 which is why last year and the year before lines were crazy. People wanted the phone on launch day so they had to wait in line to get it or wait awhile by ordering online the day of launch.

I also noticed that it was soft this year. I went searching for a Plus model because Apple failed getting them shipped to my area on release day. After going to multiple Verizon and Best Buys it was slow for all those folks that came to work early. Literally at 8:30am there was no one in Best Buy except for tons of employees. Verizon didn't even have to stagger people in groups at a time. They just let everyone in the store.
Last year was a huge difference presence wise.

I didn't preorder and went by my nearest Verizon store after work yesterday around 4:45pm. The store was the busiest I've ever seen it...even more-so than last year's launch. They were completely sold out of the 6s Plus, which is why I was there. I wanted to stick with my VZW store for the $300 trade in value of my 5s, but have since abandoned that hope since 3 of the 4 VZW stores I tried here were all out of the Plus and they will refuse to tell you on the phone if they have any in stock. So instead, I went to Kroger and bought $900 in Apple Store gift cards, which netted me 3600 fuel points (meaning I can get gas for $1 off per gallon 3 different times and 60 cents off per gallon once in the next couple months).

Friends reported going to the Apple Store here this morning at 8am and finding they had all models in stock because of 700 reservations they had yesterday, only about 350 picked them up. When I stopped in there this afternoon, they didn't have any Plus models in stock, but told me to check the website first thing in the morning for a reservation because they are releasing the phones not picked up each night.

At least in my area the plus models did not sell out; stores never got the deliveries or they only got a few. One Verizon store got 2 at 11am that morning. Can't really say that they sold out if they never had the stock to begin with. To me Apple dropped the ball. How can you have tons of regular 4.7" models on launch and not a single Plus model? I was number 2 in line.

Weird thing is that even today I have still only sold 2 iPhone 6s since they have launched.

Keep in mind my store is a high traffic location so I'm still selling many other devices, but I haven't sold that many 6s which is still odd to me.

In my location seems like people are taking advantage of the price drops for the older models so I've sold more iPhone 6 models, some 5s models, and some people are even wanting left over 5c models (because of clearance pricing on installments...only financing $300) this weekend.

I think China saves Apple this year. A redesigned 7 should help them next year. The problems come after that growth wise once China is milked. It's not a big deal. Apple will have to work harder which is good for us.

Local Verizon store where I had pre ordered: They opened an hour early expecting people and no one. They had some stock in some models about 3:00 PM when I went in to pick up my pre-order (ordered on the 21st). I suspect it all depended upon what model and size. From what I heard and read - sound as if "no one" wanted 16GB models in certain colors. I had said - as recently as as a couple of weeks ago that I wouldn't get bigger than 16GB because I've always dealt with 16GB but then I decided I was tired of managing storage and got 64 GB - I sense a lot of people did that. I'm sure I'll be managing storage again 1 year from now

I've done the camp out thing before just out of fun. The fun goes away really quickly once you get to the front or at the front and the model you want is either sold out or never came in. I believe frustration has set in. Sort of like how many sequels are we going to have to the same thing?

I will be ordering online when the 7 pre-order opens and just take it from there. It was fun while it lasted.

This year it took a week for pre-sales to sell out, and Apple offered pre-sales for a week longer than last year. I think they had plenty of supply and wanted to take advantage of it as much as possible.

Thats exactly my point. Im saying there was a lot less camping this year because it was easy to preorder. I walked into AT&T yesterday and they had plenty of 64gb space grey in stock, was also able to make a reservation yesterday morning at 8 for a rose gold for a different line.

No complaints here. Was happy my Apple.com pre-order went very smooth this time. Feels like they have improved the entire process.

I knew not to mess with any of the reservation system or payment plans. I pay full price but recycle/sell my old phone to Gazelle.com so it makes up for the price difference.

Even friends who did the reservation to pickup at Apple Store in person said it was much better this year and more organized. Of course I know that can greatly depend on individual store management. I'm glad it seemed to go well.

Now to get ready for iPhone 7! ;)

Dare I say kudos to Angela Ahrendts on a smooth launch weekend?

Yes, I think that Apple's Unlocked iPhone Installment Program had a lot to do with it. Also, I think that the fact that there was about 2 weeks from announcement to In-Store Launch and the subsequent pre-orders also had a lot to do with it. I myself also saw this phenomenon and I too work for a major carrier, but unlike you I did many upgrades the day of and since launch. As far as selling out, I don't think we have sold out of Every Onel. We have sold out of certain models everyday, but not all. Yes, it is different; that's for sure. There are a lot more pre-orders this year....and also, I don't really think people have really warmed up to all the Installment plan options that are now the mainstay of upgrade processes. I also think that many people think that their '6' is just fine. They may be thinking, "Why get a 6S when my 6 is not paid off yet; I'll just wait for the 7." They know that they can trade it in, but they'd rather just pay it off and wait and enjoy those few months without an installment while they wait for the 7. I think that it's a lot of little things that add up to what we're seeing. I don't think that it's any one thing, but rather several different type of causal factors that add up to a lack of flurry.

I think Apple had Plenty of stock on hand so they offered launch day and pre-sales in CHINA killing US resaller imports and de-hyping demand. Mainly because Apple had plenty of body units instock and parts ready to go.
This won't happen for the iPhone 7 unlikey CHINA will get pre-orders because there just wont be enough iPhones 7 made its a whole new re-design and new internals also.

This year I went to an ATT corporate store... because they are the only one offering a subsidies phone for 2 years contract. I want an Space Gray iPhone 6s Plus 64gb. I heard they are selling like hot cakes, and go out of stock real quick. So I went to the nearest store in my area around 4am. I was surprised there is only 3 people ahead of me. But they all want a rose gold, I thought I was safe that nobody in front of me wants a space gray 64 gb (no competition). Then when it is my turn to buy the phone, Sales rep said "sorry we don't have the Space gray on 64gb we only have Silver or Gold. We only have 128gb on Space Gray." I already waited 4 hours, and I'am not a fan of white bezel on front of my phone, so I have no choice but to get the Space Gray 128 GB Iphone 6s Plus. So yes not enough excitement on Carrier office but also they don't always have the stock that you want. If not for 2 years subsidy phone, I would love to go to a Apple Store. I always believe that ATT next won't benefit me at all.
