Did you by any chance purchase a subsidized phone from AT&T within the last two years?

This is my situation. I was eligible for an upgrade a few months ago. I bought a refurbished Treo 750 so that used my upgrade. On May 31, I bought an iPhone at an AT&T store & activated it. So, I have purchased a subsidized phone within the last two years & I have purchased an iPhone. And that iPhone was purchased after May 27th :).

Many apologies for two posts instead of one!

Anyone considered this...

I've been reading these threads and just had to put my two cents in. First off nothing is official yet, so no sense getting all worked up over it. Until it's on AT&T and/or Apple's websites it's all just theories and rumors.

Saying that, I am also in the ineligibility limbo like many people. Even if there is a non-subsidized price for us, I wonder if that would last. The 2G iphone had one price and that was it, so you had to buy it at that. Even then the price was eventually dropped to increase sales.

In the case of the 3G iphone, if there is a higher non-subsidized price, people know there is a cheaper price and that may effect sales. Sure there will be some people willing to pay anything just to get the 3G iphone, but I don't think that will be as high as with the 2G iphone. People may just wait for their eligibility or just skip the 3G iphone altogether. The psychological impact of having two different sets of prices may effect people's buying impulse.

If AT&T sees this happen, I think they would probably lower the price for ineligible customers as well. I mean they will still make more money over the length of the contract due to the increased price of the data plan and additional few for text messaging. Apple may even force or strenuously encourage AT&T to drop the price for ineligible customers just to boost sales.

It may take a few months after launch for that to happen, but that's what I foresee happening if there is an initial non-subsidized price for the 3G iphone.

Just got an email from at&t back about the iPhone.

Most is stuff we already heard before...

Dear Mr. M,

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding concerning the new Apple iPhone 3G. I am happy to help you with your inquiry.

Mr. M, I understand your concerns regarding the release of the 3G iPhone. I can appreciate you wanting to get the best value on your new phone and I apologize for any frustration that the new equipment or promotion may have caused. After reveiwing your account I see you purchased your Blackjack on 12/20/07 with a two year agreement, however we allow our customer to upgrade to a discounted phone upgrade a few months earlier which you would be eliglbie to upgrade until 08/21/09.

Accounts are always eligible for equipment upgrades an you can always take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option. Due to recent changes in the guidelines for equipment upgrade price breaks device offers are now made available from time to time based on a number of
factors: service tenure, spending levels, payment history, usage practices and other factors. Previously, customer?s offers were based only on how many months remained on their contract or time since last upgrade.

Mr. M, at this time we do not have details of the full retail price for the Apple iPhone 3G.

The new 3G iPhone, which is scheduled to be available 7/11/2008, will harnesses the power of AT&T's broad and powerful 3G mobile broadband network. Please visit http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iPhone.jsp?
To submit your e-mail address to find out more about the new 3G iPhone as soon as it?s available. You can also check 3G coverage availability for your area by using the 3G Coverage Viewer link or by visiting www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer. AT&T's 3G network is currently available in 280 leading U.S. metropolitan areas; by year-end, the company plans to offer 3G service in nearly 350 metro areas.

The 3G iPhone will initially only be available for purchase at company owned AT&T retail stores and Apple stores. There is a limit of three per customer for the 3G iPhone in AT&T stores and customers will be required to pay for the device when the order is placed. The phone will be shipped to the store in the customer's name. We will continue to sell 2G devices until they are out of stock. All of our current postpaid 2G iPhone customers that are in good standing are upgrade eligible and will qualify to upgrade to a 3G iPhone when it is available. Customers that do not currently have an iPhone must qualify for an upgrade to the 3G iPhone and can verify upgrade options via myWireless Account or by contacting Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 when the new device becomes available. No-commitment pricing is unavailable for the 3G iPhone, which will only be available for purchase with a new 2 year service agreement.

The new 3G device will be activated in store in both AT&T and Apple store locations. You must accept AT&T and Apple's Terms and Conditions, as well as select a 3G iPhone Data plan before leaving the store. You can add the $30.00 per month 3G iPhone Unlimited Data (Email-Web) plan that includes Visual Voicemail to your qualifying voice plan. The 3G iPhone $45.00 per month Unlimited Data with personal and Corprorate e-mail, Web, and Visual Voicemail can be added to your qualifying voice plan if you intend on using the 3G iPhone for access to corporate e-mail, business applications, or access to corporate intranet. The activation process for 3G iPhones includes a short tether process to unbrick the 3G device and will be performed in all AT&T stores (tether cords will be provided). Apple stores will also perform this tether process, however, in the event that your device is not tethered in the Apple store, your device will be inoperable until you get home and tether through iTunes. Prepaid and Pick Your Plan service will not be available on the 3G device. Service discounts are available to qualifying customers for individual user accounts for voice and data plans on the 3G iPhone only. The return policy for the new 3G iPhone is 30 days for both Apple and AT&T stores. To cancel service within the first 30 days, you must return your equipment to the place of purchase.
If you cancel after the 30 days, you will be charged the early termination fees and are not required to return the device.

I hope that the information provided has been helpful and has resolved all of your questions. If you need further assistance, feel free to reply to this e-mail or contact customer service at 1-800-331-0500 or
611 from your wireless phone.

I encourage you to visit our web site (www.att.com/wireless) often to view current and previous monthly statements, make payments and to shop for new product and service offerings. Thank you for allowing the new AT&T to serve as your wireless company. We will do our best to ensure that your wireless experience is a success.

Thank you for being part of the AT&T Family, we appreciated your business.

So glad I finally found a forum with people who know what's going on with the iPhone! Have been receiving a lot of conflicting information (as has everyone else ;)) but I'm hoping that someone here might have a recommendation for me (especially saDeRmac).

I have been a customer with AT&T for quite a while, and my current contract is up as of 07/01/2008. However, because of my employer's arrangement with AT&T, I was previously able to order up to 4 phones per year without extending my contract. This policy was changed recently, so my records now indicate that I will not be eligible for an equipment upgrade until 2009.

So, here's my question: Can I cancel my contract on 07/10 and then walk into the AT&T store and get an iPhone 3G as a new customer on 7/11? Better yet, can I cancel/reapply in the store on 7/11? I wouldn't have to pay a penalty for cancelling, since my contract will have been over by then. One of the AT&T customer reps seemed to think this would be a good option for me, but I'm wondering if I need to be terminated for a certain period of time before they can consider me to be a "new" customer. (An earlier post seemed to indicate 3 months?)

Since my contract is over anyway, I can just as easily switch carriers now, so I'm hoping that AT&T has some sort of provision for people in my situation. I don't care about keeping my current phone number. I'd love to have the new iPhone, but I can't think of another solution that will allow me to get the new phone. Any suggestions would be most welcome... thanks!

First - Some background,

This is tentative, but reports coming from AT&T (See their forums) are that existing customers who don't have iPhones and aren't eligible for device upgrades, will not be able to purchase the new iPhone for the advertised price. Rather, we will have to pay some unsubsidized higher price along with the higher data plan rate. That stinks. My razr broke down in april and I renewed with a cheapy, waiting for the new iPhone. Now it looks like I'll have to pay even more cash for one.

While it might be more cost effective to break your contract (depending on the non-subsidized price), a better way is to find someone who is upgrading their iPhone and ask them nicely to borrow it for a little while.

Step 1) Wait for your friend to upgrade
Step 2) Activate using their old phone
Step 3) Buy a new iPhone - as you are an existing iPhone user, you qualify to "reset" your contract and pay the same price as everyone else.
Step 4) Give your friend their old iPhone back (it still makes a great iPod or backup).
Step 5) Buy your friend lunch.
Step 6) Contact your congressperson to complain about the fairness of these cell phone contracts.

I was just thinking about this today. Good job on putting it into words. What if they put checks in though that can tell if you purchased it for your own account from AT&T or Apple? I hope this would work, I love stickin it to the man. Corporate jerks.

Followup:

Went to the AT&T store, and they let me sign up for a second account immediately; so I picked up a cheap phone, which I'll trade in for the iPhone on 7/11. Evidently AT&T has no concerns about setting up separate accounts, each of which has its own guidelines on phone upgrades. So, I currently have two phone numbers, and will be cancelling my existing account after 7/1, once the 2 years is up.

Sorry, probably not useful for the other members who have been looking for answers. I did find that the in-store reps seemed to have a much better sense of what the limits and guidelines are for the iPhones, so I'd recommend visiting the local stores rather than calling AT&T customer service wherever possible. Hope everyone is able to get their issues resolved...

the op procedure works!! According to my at&t account, i wasn't eligible for a headset upgrade until April 2009(got a free phone from at&t), which meant paying for the unsubsidized 3g iphone price.

what i did was borrowed a friends unlocked iphone(which i originally sold to) and locked it back up(go to hackthatphone.com for procedure), i activated the iphone with itunes under my account/phone number. when i was done, i logged back onto my at&t account, and checked my eligibility, which now says "This line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sign up for a 2-year service agreement."

if you can get a hold of an iphone, and you are not eligible for an upgrade, i recommend doing this to avoid paying the unsubsidized price....also dont forget to unlock it back up before returning the iphone to your friend :p

ctnguye3 - Thanks for verifying this! Please let us know after 7/11 if this allows you to purchase at the subsidized price.

Until then, given the uncertainty surrounding AT&T's pricing and business rules, I don't think we can claim victory.

I will be getting the iphone 3g on 7/11, so i will definitely report back and let everyone know if it works. :)

Sorry, but I'm still not believing it by what someone says. AT&T allowed everyone to buy a 1st gen phone last year whether they were eligible or not, so why would they not do it this time? Doesn't make sense. We'll see what happens between now and July 11th, however I'm still optimistic based on what Ive been told, what I've read in other articles citing sources and how they have handled it in the past.
From the horse's mouth means from an intranet site within at&t... I am not going to try to convince you that I'm legit because I do not like stalkers (lol)... I just hope that you believe me... (but if you would still like proof PM me and we'll talk)

...Just to let you know... It might work but I dunno if the audit crew is gonna come back and see that you switched... I can't guarantee that its gonna work..

Right you are and I even work for the company...

Anyway guys... keep PMing me if you have any more questions... I'm gonna start checking them regularly... (the boss just started making the schedule tighter. I'm PT and I'm getting 40+ for the next couple of weeks). So thanks once again for being good sports and respecting my answers...

I just wanted to report back that I had no problems getting my new iPhone 3G for the subsidized price, my only minor complaint is the iPhones 3G's LCD quality is not that great compare (to the 1st gen). It's hard to explain, but the LCD has a yellowish tint...Well I guess its better than having one with dead pixels, overall I'm happy and can't wait to play with the new apps :)

ctnguye3 - Thanks for checking back in.

I ended up not trying any of these schemes, but for some reason, they showed me as eligible anyway!!! :) My only thought is that I had bought the original in April but returned it less than two weeks later to wait for the 3G. Maybe that tricked their systems.

Anyways, Happy iPhone Day Everyone!!!

This is probably a really old post, but does the method listed in the beginning of the thread still work? @saDerMac I would have PMd for something like this, but being a new user, I can't do that so hopefully someone will see this post.
