It was working just fine lastnight before I turned my laptop off, but when I turned it on earlier, I wasn't getting sound from my programs.

I get the boot up sound, and when I press the volume down or volume up buttons on my keyboard, I get the sounds.

I went through all my programs to check if the audio was working correctly on any of them and the only ones that are working are Google Chrome and Quicktime player.

VLC, iTunes, etc, aren't working, and I don't know why. Please help.

Not to state the obvious, but if you're using external speakers, have you tried unplugging the 1/8" jack from the sound port, then plugging it right back in? This has worked for me in the past.

I'm using the internal speakers.

Well, just to troubleshoot, if you have external speakers (or can easily borrow some), or even just a set of headphones, try plugging them into the sound port. If you hear sound, you'll know that the problem is not the computer's ability to produce sound, but either a problem with the internal speaker or some setting that is messing you up.

Okay. I'll try that now.

*Edit*

I plugged in my headphones, and I was still getting audio from Google Chrome, but not VLC. I unplugged them, and tried VLC again, but there was no change.

Can you play the same audio file (.mp3, .waf, .aiff, .m4a) in all three players (VLC, iTunes, QT Player) and only get a sound in QT Player?

What iTunes, VLC, QT Player and Mac OS X versions do you use?

I opened an MP3 file in all the players you mentioned, and I only got sound out of Quicktime.

iTunes is version 9.2.1, VLC is version 1.0.5 (It does need an update), QT is version 10.0, and Mac OS X is version 10.6.4.

*Edit*

I'm going to update VLC Player and see if that changes anything.

I installed the latest version of VLC, and I am now getting audio from it. However, I'm still not getting audio from iTunes or any other program besides QT, Chrome, and, of course, VLC.
