Recently my mac gave me a blinking folder image with a question mark upon start up. The hard drive was corrupted and I purchased a new hard drive and installed it. However the computer does not seem to be recognizing the hard drive when I try to reinstall the OS. Any ideas?

That's because the HDD is not formatted or uses the wrong format.
You have to start from the Install DVD, select the language, go to Utilities > Disk Utility and select the HDD and choose Mac OS Extended as Format (file system).
Then you can install Mac OS X.

But when I go to Disc utility it doesn't list the hard drive. It lists the cd rom drive and the install disc in the cd rom drive.
