Today I was at a Chipotle on Long Island and there was this big line and this one guy was on his iPhone but it had a gray, metal looking back like the iPad. At first I thought it was a case but then I realized the Apple logo was still on the back and it wasn't a cut out in the case. I looked closer and saw that it had one line in the frame at the top right side like the Verizon iPhone 4 only this one also had a sim card slot. The front was black and looked like the iPhone 4. When the guy saw me starring at it he quickly shoved it in his pocket and left it there even when it started ringing. Not sure what it was but it was definitely some kind of iPhone.

i have heard about someone on MR who replaced the glass on there iPhone with carbon...

Probably a custom backplate, as you can see I have a carbon fiber backplate with a carbon fiber wrap around the antenna. If you are in New York and he shoved it back in his pocket really fast, he probably was afraid you would mug him...

If you weren't in California, you definitely didn't see anything.

Dude, thats sick!

Cupertino, Ca is not the only office building Apple has (their are several around the world). So if the OP was in long island, thats not too far fetch seeing as how Apple does have an Office in New York. Also, its not out of the probability that Apple would want to field test their device in multiple cities, conditions and environments, not just the bay area.

Do you seriously think there are iPhone 5's out in the wild that are naked?

Like others have said it was a custom back plate.

Probably a metal back plate, or a case (they sell them with the apple logo too). He probably shoved it in his pocket since he thought you were going to steal it lol.

Last year everyone complained that of course Apple was unaware of receptions issues, they field tested the iPhone 4 in iPhone 3GS like cases. So yes I do believe that this time around Apple is field testing the next iPhone without a case to prevent a situation like last year.

That's true but Apple design/engineering is headquarted in Cupertino. So chances are that you would see a prototype iPhone there more likely than anywhere else.

I agree that they would test in different areas, however - all the iPhone leaks have came from either Cali or from Asian countries (due to their hosting of iPhone factories).

Reminds me of the White iPhone 4 sightings. One thread with a picture was clearly a white skin nevertheless custom glass modifications.

I'm at Chipotles on LI all the time ! Lol, deff haven't seen a new iPhone tho

there are a lot of custom backs on iPhone 4's nowadays. In fact among the people I know personally I am one of the few people who have not modified the look of the phone.

New York is a notoriously bad area for iPhone reception (at least with AT&T), so it makes sense that they would test the phone there

Pretty much 100% certain it was a user mod. You don't really expect them to let any test items out that didn't look like an i4 did you?

To all the replies saying a case mod/back, is there a case mod out there that adds an extra break in the frame (with sim) as the OP described...
