Why are you assuming that the OP will have to replace his macbook in a couple of years?

It's just based off of my experience with other people replacing their MBAs within a couple of years due to them slowing down with OS upgrades and the demands of newer software. Many people that I talk to and see on a daily basis also end up replacing their MBAs or selling them in favor of other machines that offer more internal storage that still offer great portability for a better price.

That depends on what you mean by upgrades. If you mean upgrading at the time of purchase to build a 13" MBA with an i7, 8GB RAM and 512 SSD; then that would be a much better purchase if the MBA is the desired machine. That's fine. However, that configuration would cost $1800.

Given what the OP was looking at as far as initial cost, desire for longevity of the machine, and also considering refurbished models, I don't see the base model MBA as a good option and the fully upgraded version also doesn't seem to be the right fit.
