Well, exactly! ;) Meanwhile, I understand there are a number of features in Sonoma that will not appear in the version running on M1 or earlier. This was noted in a review I saw somewhere online. They're still selling the M1, but it seems they have already decided its headed for 'obsolete.' Nice...
"Faster video encoding. Encode video faster in Final Cut Pro, Compressor, and third-party video applications on Mac computers using M1 Ultra or M2 Ultra."

"Sonoma also brings us our first feature that can only work on a subset of Apple Silicon Macs. MFI-certified assistive hearing devices can be paired directly to Macs, but not to Macs with a vanilla M1 inside. You'll need an M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, or any flavor of M2 chip to use this feature; the vanilla M1 is not supported."

I'm assuming one can upgrade from Monterey straight to Sonoma?
Then again, may be an idea to move to Ventura when Sonoma is released - stay one OSX version behind!
I always stay a complete version behind. Being an Apple beta tester does not appeal.

But there's nothing to care about in Ventura, so no reason to install it. Monterey will be supported for another year, plenty of time to determine whether Sonoma is worth bothering with.

I am still on Monterey because it's supported on my MacBook Pro 2015 and stable. Next year I'll use OpenCore with a later system if I don't have troubles. Otherwise I will buy a MacBook Air 15 inch.

I am on monterey because sonoma broke Broadcom wifi support (which card I am using). So no to upgrade.

Sonoma is great, fast responsive as ventura was
BUT
there is something excellent about Monterey on my MacBook M1 that the last 2 os don't feature.
im thinking about reinstalling Monterey from scratch Nov 1st and add what i need
and waiting until the next  "M" oOS cuz Mountain Lion Mojave and Monterey
were vast improvements and very special to us.

hope tis helped!

What is the feature?
"Feature" was the wrong term,  rarely omits them from OS upgrades.
just the over feel, the control of AirPods were the auto feature in "Sonatura" or "Ventoma"is annoying for me.
the experience of using Monterey is more pleasant than the last 2 OS which are incredible too.
even using Monterey on an external drive with the M1 MacBook Air.
