Is a hump better than a notch? Here's what Lenovo designed. (Lenovo ThinkBook 13x)

I would rather not have a weird looking hump on the top of my screen. If I had the choice, I would choose not to have the camera because I never use it on any laptop. It seems unnecessary because you can use your iPhone or a separate camera in the Windows world.

Of course this is just me rarely needing video calls and if I do, I can use my phone. I’m sure there’s some executive out there that makes hourly zoom calls and absolutely loves the built-in camera.

I've grown to become a fan of imperfect design (wabi-sabi). Ofc, ideally a notchless/humpless solution would be best, but I appreciate both these solutions, the notch more so because it's more elegant.

There are benefits in both designs. I prefer not to have a hump, primarily for aesthetics and not needing to use a camera that much.

Neither are good. There are some OEM's who have delivered thin top bezels and included a windows hello camera. In the Mac's since they are not using Face ID I don't see why they couldn't get a high megapixel camera without resorting to the notch. It is clearly a design language which then Apple killed on the iPhone with the dynamic Island.

At least Lenovo use a Windows hello infra red camera so the bump seems justified over Apple with just a single camera sensor.

I like Samsung's design using super slim bezels on the GB4 and just a regular no Windows hello camera and using the power button with fingerprint reader.

In any event log in on Windows is much better since Face ID has yet tom show up on a Mac so even with a fingerprint reader you still have to input your password while with Windows Hello using a camera or fingerprint automatically logs you in without further input.

Notch is worse — plain horrible — as it's a distraction on the screen itself. But instead of such compromises, I'd prefer not to have a camera at all, like on Asus ROG Strix.

Notch works for Mac because it covers an area normally empty in the menu bar. Won’t work as well on Windows because the toolbar is normally at the bottom. So hump works better here. Both a good solution fitting their respective platforms.

AFAIK apple design adds more resolution to your screen whereas the Lenovo design adds a hump (so it looks worse).

The apple design can AFAIK be used where you “blackout” the entire notch area, this would give you less resolution but still more resolution than needed. Using it in notch mode just gives you more real-estate (especially good for macOS since all the software uses the top for the settings/options)

A big difference here is that the windows toolbar is not nearly as useful as the macOS one. MacOS is much more strealined in this regard. It’s nice that almost every app on macOS uses the same shortcuts
