Note on smart connectors for iPad and beyond..

So I know two things about smart connectors:

1. It carries power
2. It has a magnet

Why didn't apple just introduce a magsafe for the iPad? and for that, if the next iphone has the smart connector too, why not there as well? Keep the lightning port, but have the smart connector be the new de-facto way of charging your phone.

Has anybody done a teardown on if it's actually possible?

Yes it can carry a full charge. I guess I should look forward to magsafe in the future for all our products!

I read that the smart connector carries Data too and Power Both Ways but no word on how much power or Data rate each way. But it does make a perfect port or connector for some type of Rugged Tablet case with extra battery and flip out keyboard all in one accessory.

It doesn't actually have a magnet! The port itself is not magnetic, it's just held in place by the surrounding magnets, i.e. the same ones used for a Smart Cover.

If it works with the keyboard then somehow it also transfers information. The speeds at which they're transferred is something I'm not sure of.

I'm wondering about that too. As much as I'd love an iPad dock with video out, usb in and charging, I highly doubt the bandwidth is there.

I am thinking along the same lines, though it would be massively cool to have a full dock with an iPad.
