Hi. As a holiday present we are planning to buy our daughter a computer for school. She is in 8th grade now, starting high school next fall, so she doesn’t need to most powerful computer, but we do want to get one that will last the next 4-plus years. I’m completely clueless about full desktop or laptop computers since I’ve barely touched one since I got my first iPad in 2011. My wife would prefer we buy her a Mac laptop since we had a bad experience with our last Windows computer that now goes pretty much unused except for backing up the mobile devices to iTunes and picture storage. Any advice would be appreciated since I don’t even know where to start. Thanks!

I would say a MacBook for its portability alone at 2.03lbs and minimum 256GB memory.

The MacBook is overpriced and underpowered. Unless you really need extreme portability, the new MBA or the 13" MBP are much better options. For high school, you really don't need much computing power. The base MBA or 13" MBP (with higher storage) is going to be the best option for your needs.
