Aqua Emacs is still a thing too:

Downloaded it and gave it a quick whirl. The GUI feels totally off on MacOS in my opinion. Even the settings for the app is in a Settings menu in the menu bar and not under the application menu next to the Apple menu as per usual.

I really like CotEditor which feels right at home to use in MacOS.

But maybe I'm in the minority who thinks about how apps looks and ”feels”, and I'm sure there are many good features unique to Notepad++ that are useful. 🙂
That's to be expected as the project seems to be a 1:1 translation of the Windows application instead of a "localized" port

BTW worth knowing that not long ago, Notepad++ had a fairly severe security break/incident, peeps got hacked. From the horse's mouth: https://notepad-plus-plus.org/news/hijacked-incident-info-update/

meh....in the last 3 years, I have received about 8 letters from companies that maintained or had third parties who maintained health and other records, telling me the data was stolen. I have had 3 this year.

At this point, I couldn't care less about a hack at NPP. I have had my data stolen from companies that are multitudes larger than NPP.

While I’m glad about this, I wish they would make it available in the App Store. Their website had an incident earlier this year where it was compromised and was directing people to malicious links. They say it’s fixed, but the malicious actors had access for months even after they thought they kicked them out. It makes me a little hesitant.

CotEditor is my go-to. But when I heard about Notepad++ being available for Mac OS, I gave it a try because I like to use cross-platform apps whenever possible. But... ooof.

Notepad++ looks and feels brutal on Mac OS. If subsequent updates are forthcoming for Notepad++, I'll download it again and give it another try.

Notepad++ was something I really missed when I originally came from Windows. I recall using Smultron for a while to replace it but it wasn't super stable on my machines.

I've since long standardized on the Brackets editor. Runs on Win/Mac/Linux with the same bunch of extensions and I themed it too. And it's way overkill for my needs.

I use CotEditor simply because it is built from the ground up to be Mac native. It has everything TextEdit doesn’t but that I don’t need from BBEdit. Plus it’s free.

However I also keep my skills fresh with Geany for Mac. It’s my go-to text editor on my Linux computers. It’s known mostly in the Linux world but is cross platform with Windows and Mac. It’s really a micro-IDE but it sits even closer to Notepad ++ than CotEditor and is super fast. It doesn’t look “native” on Mac but it’s nicer looking than Notepad ++. It’s built on the same Scintilla engine as Notepad ++. Geany is free and open source. Give it a try.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Panic! NOVA.

Panic - Nova

Great mac editor! BBEdit is also fantastic, I missed N++ when switching to mac years ago, but there are enough great alternatives that it faded quickly.

But there are SOME Windows apps that are still great and N++ is one of them. Glad to see it ported over, and if the dev used AI to assist, so be it.

Another Windows port over to mac that I couldn't live without (and couldn't find a mac alternative to) is MP3TAG, once the mac version was released, I swiped it up on day 1 ! (it is now a paid app though, but worth the $29).

Luckily we are spoiled for options on macOS. I loved NP++ on Windows back in the day and I still use it occasionally when I have to.

VSCode has sadly become a necessary evil, but nothing comes close to the raw speed and power of Sublime Text for me - I love it on all platforms. I also quite like Zed.

Use what you enjoy !

+1 for Zed

I'm surprised there are no more mentions of Sublime Text in the comments, it's super light and efficient (Notepad++ original appeal), it is cross-platform (including all or most of its thousands of extensions) and it's constantly been iterated and improved.

When I need to open a 1GB text file (say a log file) in search for a string, Sublime Text is the one tool for the job due to its superb light efficient engine.

Edit: someone beat me to it while writing this lol.
