MacTheRipper is a PowerPC application which means its unusable under Lion.

I use MakeMKV. You can also skip Handbrake / iTunes encoding step, and just use Movist or VLC to play MKV rips. Then the whole ripping process is a single-click and takes 10 minutes.

Optical drives are the new floppy drives. Get on with it, people.

Am I the only one who hates Apple are their forcing ways. Removing Optical drives when MANY still use DVDs. I use my laptop for DVD playback all the time, buying a DVD feels much nicer than using iTunes.

Same for CD installs, what happens when you don't have Internet. Rip-off selling it for a stupid price.

Windows 8 has higher hopes in my books now, for one it'll very likely be CD and USB installed (For tablets needing USB) and it does not force anything upon you.
Personally, I think physical media is dying, digital downloads take up less physical space and the quality is just as good, if not better these days.

eBooks (Kindle, not iBooks....iBooks is too restrictive) are going to replace physical books, I mean with a Kindle you can carry about 3,500 books with you, while you may not need to carry that many books, think about bookshelves you might have at home stuffed with books.

I think Netflix is the wave of the future when it comes to movies. Why buy when you can stream all you want for $8.00/mo.? Netflix needs to get the rights to stream all movies, once that is done (they are getting closer every day), then there is no stopping them.

So, that leaves music.....I think Amazon's cloud setup beats Apple, since you can stream the music, you end up with virtually unlimited storage space on any device that can use it.

Software - App stores are clearly the future and the fact that Apple's app store totally changes the software licensing into the consumers favor is great. Amazon has once again taken it a step further and allowed you to install the software on as many systems as you want, Apple has a limit of 5 I believe.

Now by removing Optical drives, I believe Apple is striving to make this change happen faster, but they are hoping to be the ones to come out on top and for a short while (2-3 years), they will, but unless they make changes, they will loose to Amazon in the long run.

It's so sad that tech news now resembles cable news (in the replies... ).

The additional price for the thumb drive is to cover those that didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard. It's not for the drive.

Apple comes out with badazz OS for 30 bucks and people whine like creampuffs.

An optical drive won't fit in a MacBook Air. THINK people.

Does anyone know if the new Thunderbolt display works at all with non-Thunderbolt mini-display ports? I've been looking to get a Cinema Display, and though I'd hold out for the next update, but it seems like I might be better of grabbing the now-previous-gen one before they become hard to find.

Bluetooth Low Energy aka Bluetooth 4.0 is a new chipset and new spec 802.15.1. Its possible to load Bluetooth 4.0 firmware on existing bluetooth equipment but it will be in a less power saving dual-mode. To gain the real power savings (single-mode), you'll need the new chipset.
But the question is, why do you need Bluetooth Low Energy for an iMac? You never run on battery power.

No, but you still pay for the electricity you use. Cutting power consumption in every component as much as possible will help the wallet.

Would it be only a 4 GB flash drive? Wouldnt it have to carry Snow Leopard on it too? Since Lion is really just an add on to snow leopard.

Has anyone actually got hold of any of this new hardware?

I just went to the Apple Store at the Grove in LA, and they didn't have the new mac minis, and in fact there was no mention of them - the old generation and its prices were still displayed.

Add to that that the thunderbolt display is 'released' today but ships in 6-8 weeks, and on the hardware side this is a pretty sloppy release.

stoked they killed off the MB, that thing was pretty dated. Now the whole hardware line follows the looks of others. The MB had become the red headed step child

Boo, you gingerist :p

Awesome !!!

What I can't find, with my friend, is HOW to get Lion running on a Core Duo, hack and all.

Pointers?

Not possible. Lion is 64 bit only and requires a 64 bit capable cpu. If you have an iMac or a Mac Mini, then you can upgrade the cpu to a Core 2 Duo. You will need to hack a .plist to install, though. Again, Google is your friend.

another interesting note - MacBook Air does not have Facetime HD camera like the rest of the lineup?

Apple's white polycarbonate MacBook has been discontinued

thanks god! for that! (what a ugly white mac...) :D

Since Apple killed the tacky white plastic laptop, do the new systems still come with tacky white plastic power bricks and cables?

Never understood selling a machined aluminum laptop with tacky white plastic accessories.

Agree that physical media is on its way out, but there isn't yet a compelling reason to remove the SuperDrive from the Mini. On a notebook like the Air where you feel every inch and ounce, yes, but on a desktop I don't see much of a reason to get rid of it--especially since many people plug Mac Mini into a large monitor or TV to watch Netflix or other movies.

Aside from the optical drive being gone, I wonder what is changed in the hardware with the mac mini, ie is opening the case to update the hard drive different?

Sure there is! Have you looked inside of the unibody Mini case? There is not a free millimeter of space.

Getting rid of Superdrive allows apple to offer SSD+HD combination (SSD is smaller bootable drive, and 2nd drive is larger data drive). This will make for a heck of a fast system. It's not physically possible to fit SSD+HD+Superdrive in a Mini case form factor.

with the new Minis is the Radeon HD 6630M worth the extra $. I dont play games but I do watch a lot of videos and play with iMovie and im concerned the 3000HD wont be able to keep up
