idk why they don't pay Masimo and stop using people features without their permission
Because Apple’s #1 priority is profits and delivering the World’s best smartwatch is secondary to that.

We don’t reward what’s best and most innovative if it isn’t profitable.

The Apple Watch Series 10 will include a new sleep apnea detection feature, but it may not be available as soon as the new model launches, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Sleep apnea detection, which builds on the watch's existing sleep tracking, will attempt to determine if a wearer has sleep apnea and then suggest further testing with a medical professional.

Gurman had expressed doubt about the feature's inclusion in the 2024 Apple Watch model, previously reporting that Apple's efforts hadn't gone smoothly and that it had "run into some serious snags."

The sleep apnea detection feature was said to be in trouble because it relies on blood oxygen saturation, which Apple Watches in the United States cannot currently measure due to an ongoing legal dispute with Masimo.

Gurman previously suggested that the dispute with Masimo could be resolved by September, or Apple could find a way around it by arguing that the blood oxygen sensor could be used for purposes that are not directly related to blood oxygen levels. Either way, the Apple Watch Series 10 model will eventually feature sleep apnea detection, perhaps via a later software update.

Meanwhile, the new hypertension detection (high blood pressure) feature Apple appears to have been working on has been insufficiently reliable during testing, suggesting the feature is being delayed and "no longer on the cards for an immediate release," according to Gurman.

The overall design of the Apple Watch Series 10 is said to be similar to the Apple Watch Series 9, but Apple has given them slightly larger screen-size options and the watch case itself is said to be noticeably thinner. Apple is expected to unveil the new models alongside the iPhone 16 at its September 9 event.

Since my series 6 still has blood ox enabled, will it have apnea detection under the new OS?

I’ll be interested in screen sizes, in a Power On newsletter recently, Gurman said ‘about as large as the one found on the Apple Watch Ultra’ and Kuo has said something similar, but there have also been mentions of a 46mm version.

"notably thinner" is a quite diffuse explanation. If it is 1mm, I'll give it a "Meh". If it is 3mm, it could draw my interest.
But I am with you, I would prefer three days of battery life - or a week over a thinner version.
My other concern is that they tend to blame battery life on the thinness of a device...which again, some of us never asked for. If my phone being 2 MM thicker means it gets 4 hours more battery life, I want that!

Going to skip and keep my Series 4 for another year then.

There are hundreds of apps that detect snores and sleep apnea already.

The Masimo patent issues will probably go away one way or another. Masimo's stock has been flagging, there is a proxy fight for control of the company (and likely an end to the litigation), and the patents at issue will expire in 2027 or 2028 anyway, so Masimo only has a couple of years to enter the market with a competitive blood oxygen smart watch (good luck with that). All of the legal stuff is just delaying the inevitable, which is that Apple will get blood oxygen back sooner than later.

Still have the v6 and have never been impressed by it. Seems like I'll jump to a Garmin given this snails pace of development from Apple. Flatly refuse to buy another Apple watch until all of these features are implemented:

1. Actually usable battery life like the 7-16 days Garmin smart watches offer.

2. L5 GPS that can actually follow a trail and elevation changes while inside of a forest canopy or mountain valley like Garmin smart watches can.

3. Blood oxygen sensor that works while in the water.

4. eSIM data that actually works without a phone present.

5. Dive computer functionality with pressure rating to at least 150ft.

~16 hours or less on Apple watches is embarrassingly bad compared to Garmin's 7 day always on and 16 day w/ sleep mode.

My watch GPS logs from forest trails are horribly inaccurate missing most every sharp switchback and sometimes being 100ft or more away from my actual location.

Want to be able to measure blood oxygen saturation at high time resolution while diving, biking and sleeping.

Extremely frustrated that I pay for eSIM and yet can't stream music reliably or use internet connected apps reliably without my phone in pocket completely defeats the entire point of having an eSIM data plan.

Would never trust an Apple product as my primary dive computer but want a backup computer without buying a second dedicated dive computer.

Honestly how did Apple entirely loose the ability to focus on end user experience? Company truly died with Jobs none of their products are impressive any more.

I don't think there is anything Apple could add that would convince me to wear my watch to bed.. ugh..!

Tried it for three months back when I had the series 3 and never got used to it.
Why? I don’t even notice it’s on. It’s so smooth it’s not like it snags on anything

License the oxygen sensor technology already, Apple. Upgrading is a no go without it.

This new “feature” is software. O2 sensor is the key in all of this.

Hopefully Apple and Massimo have come to an arrangement and all parties are mum on it until Monday.

But...I doubt it.

Can we get one year where the highlight isn't a health feature? How about something like the Limitless Pendant? Always listening, able to organize my verbal rambling, summarizes meetings, reminds me about things I heard, etc. Wrist seems like the perfect place for a true digital assistant.

How much has Apple spent in court costs and not so great PR dealing with this issue? Masimo is a public company with a market cap of < $6B. Why doesn't Tim check the couch cushions in his office and buy it? They have other technology that would be useful going forward too.

Masimo CEO has said there are strings attached, such as permitting Masimo to be involved in the development of the AW software. That seems like a non-starter for Apple.

Thickness comes with weight, and most users will prefer the lighter phone at the same screen size. Maybe they should add an iPhone Phat model though.

It makes sense for Apple to wait for the fallout of https://www.medtechdive.com/news/Masimo-ISS-Glass-Lewis-shareholder-meeting-sues-Politan/721479/ and the result of the shareholder meeting in two weeks.

I hope the rumored blood pressure detection is also a feature. Sleep apnea alone + removal of O2 makes the sensor/health suite underwhelming compared to recent gens. Unless the revamped HRM has additional benefits.

Also hoping for a noticeably thinner design and reduced black bezels around the screen. AW needs to look more elegant. Tired of the same gadgety design. The Ultra is for those who don’t care for minimal aesthetics and want extended battery.

The Apple Watch is nothing more than a notification hound. It’s really not very useful for much as everything seems compromised in some way. Even the fitness tracking can be faulty or unreliable. I’ve done several comparisons (wearing several fitness products on the same run) and the watch tends to be very different and sometimes really inaccurate with distance or even heart rate. There have been times where the workouts don’t save. Texting is worthless. Calls are never smooth. They need to either drop it or really put more work into it.
