This is a little concept that I made up two days ago and thought the idea was interesting. Ironically, I don't have the resources to do this with iOS 7 and newer, so I had to use the iOS 6 resources I had on hand. Having this rely on the dock is a pretty neat idea and I think it could expand uses of the dock, because I think the dock should have a little more purpose than just to hold icons on the home screen. Later I'll probably make more visuals of this concept to show everything that it would do and other ideas I have for the dock itself. I think this would be a neat iOS 11 concept.

Demo song: Move Your Feet by Junior Senior, purchased on iTunes.

If you guys have any ideas please share them and I'll see what I may be able to do with them. ;)

Exactly what are you talking about? Look at the dock and you will see in the video what it does. I'm working on getting more visuals of what it does, this is just a simple short bit of it. Petty much what started it.

This looks hideous.
It's a demo of a concept. Dial it down. A company with perhaps the most competent design team came up with the iPad Pro UI.

@OP interesting concept, but this would add yet another layer to the UI to address, and that would be quite counterproductive wouldn't you say?

What would be the impact of this type of approach for notifications when on screens other than the home screen?

Hmmm... the main problem is that the user will have to "train" themselves to look at the bottom of the screen rather than the top. Also, it's plain text. Maybe add some visuals?

But really, why fix something that works decently?
