Since iOS 10, when you get a text notification on the lock screen, you can swipe to the left and you get a "Clear" option and a "View" option in order to deal with the message however I'm also finding that sometimes, the same swipe left, will bring up the camera screen, which is on the next screen - and it's becoming annoying?!!!

All I want to do is swipe to reply to the text but instead, the swipe just brings up the camera screen instead?! Is there a way to turn off access to the camera on the lockscreen or am I just doing something wrong?!??

You're almost certainly not doing anything wrong. I've had to change my behavior a bit throughout the beta period because of an issue with the touch target for notifications. There's a significant amount of space at the top of notifications (not the entire "header" but a significant part of it. I've just tried it and it's still an issue in gm) that does not respond to touch or swipe. This isn't a problem with imprecise touching or swiping - it can be reproduced slowly and carefully. I'm guessing that you, like me, for whatever reason have an innate tendency to target that area for swiping. Assuming this is what's happening to you then I can only suggest trying to retrain yourself to target the middle of notifications. Since I started doing that I've had no issues like that.

I had the same problem for a while. Here is a rundown of how it works

Swipe right to left: clears it
Swipe left to right: opens the app
Tap: don't even do it, works sometimes doesn't others
Force press (long press for older phones) : shortcuts or reply to message

My strategy is just swipe from left to right to view it or force press for a quick action. I don't tap anynore
