Notifications when screen is locked

Is it possible to show a mail or sms icon letting you know that you have new items when you phone is in the locked state so i don't have to unlock the phone to check if I have messages?

Not on a standard phone. I believe such things may be possible on a jailbroken phone...

of course only for jailbroken phones .... and I´m not sure if it´s still there, because I´m not jailbroken anymore

Jailbreak and use LockInfo - it does exactly what you want.

You can get the app called 'Boxcar' from the app store. It will do e-mail, but not the SMS, I think.

It will put up a push notice whenever you get mail.
