It's a US Navy Battleship of some kind, my initial thought was part of The Great White Fleet, but I'm not sure.
Pre-dreadnought, so likely before, what, 1900 I think? The battleships that followed lacked the decorations you saw on the old ones. Stuff like that gold-coloured scroll-y stuff on the bow were completely passé after the turn of the century or so.

snip, dude

It would be great if you could post a link. Thanks. That pic is awesome. :)

Weird to think that one of these displays is 24 inches and the other is 17.

This looks like Theodore Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, but I can't place the ship. I'm good with Navy ships and classes from the last 30 years ago, but that old? No way! :)

Uhhh... The USS Missouri (BB-11) was commissioned in 1900 and decommissioned in 1919. She was part of the Great White Fleet, and had her cage masts fitted somewhere around 1909.

Ship's names get reused, y'know. I'm not talking about the Missouri you're thinking of.
;)

Well thank you, I not only did not know the name of the ship. I had no idea what the "Great White Fleet" was I have now found a great site on line. At 63yrs you can still learn things.:)

I just snagged Lifehacker's new(ish) wallpaper.

Well, I stand corrected. Not too familiar with ships that old. I've only deployed on 11 of them! :)

You gave me the answer. On your hunch, I went through a list of the ships in the Great White Fleet and found her there. Nice catch!
:D

Until yesterday, I really only knew them as a vague reference by name. I read a good bit about them yesterday and that US Navy history website has some great photos on it.

It must have been quite a site to see them arrive at port!

It's even better in person. When I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, I watched the New Jersey pull in. Those things are BEASTS. They can put the Fear Of God into anyone.

Actually, the BB class was and still the most powerful surface warship in maritime history. No other class of ship could **** something up like the BB.

Ha, that's sweet! It would be cool if you could have the Snow Leopard background layered on top of it, but have it be opaque so you could still see the "guts".

That might be worth trying. We'll see what a little photoshop can do and if it turns out good I'll post later.

I think you mean translucent :p

Your right. I was more thinking about the process in making it translucent.

For some reason a translucent image is made by changing its "opacity"... I dunno why they don't call it "translucency" lol.

Changed my desktop again to a picture I took of the 2011 Chevy Volt at an auto show I went to today.
