Maybe you should make your icons a little bigger.

Was that sarcasm (in regards to the desktop icons) or not sarcasm (in regards to the dock)? If the latter, I leave it that small (w/ magnification, of course) because I have really good eyesight and like to leave the windows above the dock, so it gives me a bit of extra screen real estate.
