This is brilliant, but should be taken further.

I'm going to buy TWO Macbooks. I'll keep one in the box and only use the second one. That way, the first one is in mint condition so I'll be able to sell it for loads in a few years time.
A good condition Apple I is going for usd$500K.

I got a few Cloud-9 Remotes, of the Wozniak fame, lets hear the bids :)

This is why Mac desktop sales are in the toilet. People buy MacBooks even though they'll never leave the house.

Support the Mac mini/studio/iMac etc!

The advantage of an external keyboard is the included number pad. The one feature I miss on a MBP of any size is the lack of a number pad (and Microsoft Excel).
Although this sounds like a good idea, all windows laptops I've used with numpad is a pain to actually use.
The keyboard gets offset and that mess up fingering massively and slows down typing a lot.

What next? Preserving the resale value of your shoes by making longer steps? Seriously, none of these 'I preserve the value of my stuff by avoiding using it' threads make any sense.

Just came across this and this is clever and makes total sense.

I will not bother to read all 3 pages of comments, but I will say that the OP idea is so non-rational as to be absurd.

Also as someone who daily uses an MBP in desktop replacement mode (perhaps about half the time with +2 external 4K displays) I use the high end dislplay, the keyboard and the top end trackpad that come as part of an MBP. Buying all that top end hardware and not using it makes zero sense.

I have three machines to use. I use all on an external monitor and keyboard. I have a surface pro and a mac laptop. I use an external Bluetooth keyboard on both largely because its convenient because I often sit at an angle form the machine (don't ask me why) and I use mice rather than trackpads because I hate trackpads. I use an external monitor 95% of the time except on the surface pro. When my kit is out though I use the kit and don't worry. When my kit is indoors i like using the 40" monitor.

Laptop number pads are terrible. I spend 20+ hours a week in Excel just punching in numbers and can't handle not having a number pad, so an external it is. MacBook is docked at home, with a BT keyboard/mouse and a monitor. I take it with me every day to work, where it lives as a laptop...but I also have a docked Dell laptop.

As for this thead.... 🤣🤣🤣

I do the same with my 2019 16" MacBook Pro, have done it since my 2012 MBP and it still is in great shape. if I want to take something mobile in use my iPad or my 2012 MacBook Pro. and yes I have an M4 Mac mini, but I day trade and run 3 monitors off single aftermarket keyboard mouse not using side car, unless I want. my iPad is normally involved also for my wallets

Or you could buy a product to actually use it fully for a sensible proportion of it's lifetime and get whatever it's worth when you need a new one.

If you're trying to jump through hoops to save a minimal amount of money so you can always be buying the newest/best products, then can't actually use them properly because of how you're behaving oddly, you probably need counselling.
