Thanks for the advice guys! I will pursue the upgrading RAM option and see if I can buy more time. At the very least, I don't have to annoy the wife if she inherits a slow machine.:D

RAM won't make it all that much faster tbh. I did the same for my SO and they still had issues with it being so slow (2011 or 2012, i can't remember). So, a couple months later I finally got tired of watching them struggle to even start it up so I went and ordered a 1TB SSD. Now that thing is smoking fast. That, the SSD, is huge over the slow, decrepit HDD. Moral of the story, while getting the RAM also get an SSD. You won't regret it and it's super easy to install.

Ok, this is now getting ridiculous. The latest rumor is an October event to introduce the new MBP. It keeps getting pushed out. My late-2011 MBP is running on fumes and I desperately need to upgrade and have been putting it off for a year. Not sure how they can keep delaying this as sales are already taking a hit. Are they really going to release the underwhelming iPhone 7 and the Apple Watch 2 in Sept. ahead of new Macs? Considering it's been almost a year and a half since the last upgrade, this is pretty embarrassing. HP is beating Apple at its own game.

This complaint keeps being aired here, and I'm jiggered if I can understand it. Apple isn't a club, and their fans aren't privileged members to be pandered to. It's a business (mainly a phone business) and they introduce new products when that suits their purposes, just like any other business. Are you aching for a new model car, fridge, or toaster? Apple owe you nothing, and you are free to spend your money with someone else.
