Munster's report suggests that the cannibalization of iPods rather than Macs is a direct result of Apple's positioning of the iPad and the capabilities offered by it.

This is why I was never interested in the iPad at all, though. Email looks spiffy, but everything else about it seems to have absolutely nothing with getting things done.

I know people like the device, but it kind of seems more like a TV to me than anything else. Something you use kind of passively. My iPod is great for just that....

If Apple makes some sort of ultra-portable that has creative content, I'd buy it....

Interesting. I'm not surprised if it cannibalises some of the notebook sales, particularly in the 13-inch range, but iPods? You can't really pocket a iPad (unless you have very big pockets!) and it seems like a very different use. Wonder what the reasoning is.

iPad a novelty?

Guys, guys, c'mon...

If you buy an iPad and don't buy any apps and leave it as it is you can bet is a damn novelty.

but right now I spend more than $100.00 on professional apps and let me tell you that the only difference between my MBP and my iPad is that the MBP can burn DVDs/CDs.

My hard core jobs as video editing and graphic arts are made in my iMac.

My iPad is the tool I was looking for a long time.

I actually was using my MBP and to be honest the advantages of having an iPad instead of a laptop are well noticeable.

Once you depend on the iPad (not for consuming media) for work you will never go back to a laptop.

For media, you have Handbreak, Ripit, MDRP, Mactheripper, Xtorrent and Toast. Yep as everybody do so don't tell me you have a full iPod with paid media... That's more than a year salary. Do you really think people is going to fill 64gigs of paid media? LMFAOL

So, for productivity and real work the iPad replaces my laptop to the fullest.

It's not a novelty. The iPod Nano with a camera... that's a NOVELTY.

so stop saying that the iPad is a big iPod Touch or a toy, remember that the apps define your iDevice.

The iPad can only do certain things well, even if you use Sketchbook Pro on it for 'on the go' conceptualization phases. But for real 'hard core' work, the iPad is'nt appropriate because it does lack certain elements to get the job done. For one, you can't draw with pressure sensitivity on it like the Wacom tablet. Wacom is the KING of that market and many designers in the field use them for this reason. I still use the 9 x 12 Intuos since 2003 and it works very well.

So, I'm going to have a hard time believing that the iPad does everything the MBP does. The one good thing it can do is act as a showpiece device to potential clients as a portable 'book'/portfolio so that clients can't force you to make changes on the spot when you're in a meeting or take files with them.

The iPad can do certain basic work but to a certain point. It will take some time before the iPad or the tablet market will replace laptops with enough processing power and RAM to run high powered applications such as Adobe Photoshop.

Has the novelty worn off? I think this is going to be highly common. Loads of people buying the iPad, using it for a few months and then it sits in a drawer mostly.

Good for Apple for getting people to buy it and use it long enough that it can't be returned. The iPad is a novelty.

Disagree entirely and your comment is a novelty as well - giggle

For 90% of my work I only use my iPad. Even at my office where my MBP now resides, I find I only touch the MBP when I have to. Anyone who thinks the iPad is a novelty item is mistaken and underestimates the "magic" of the thing. Though I will not buy another notebook, I will be purchasing an iMac, which I never thought about doing before.

I also think we will see a new line of iPod touches aimed at kids and game players. One will be similar to today's iPod only with iPhone 4G like specs priced around $149 for the entry device, and the other a likely 5 – 7 inch version at the current higher–end price point.

I would love to know how you can get 90% of your work done on iPad with no file system. Please share.

Well said - as a graphic artist and regular traveler around Asia as a conference speaker THE IPAD IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED in mobile computing in the last 15 years!

Great Battery, Great Features, Great Screen, Great Apps, Great Company (Great Kool Aid - who cares i love it)

Who needs flash - i dont (and as an ex-flash programmer the sooner it dies the better)

Who needs a camera - i dont.

Who needs a USB port - i dont

No sorry it is not a novelty but an innovation.

Apple needs to make

a device that plays Blu-Ray discs, plays PS3 games, connects to NetFlix, has a front-facing camera, a 10 megapixel side-facing camera, runs Flash and Windows, fits in that little coin pocket in my jeans and, with third-party special attachments, can be used as a personal and intimate massaging wand. Thye can call it: iWant.

Um and the battery will last less than ten minutes :D

Slap a Swiss Army knife and a smoke machine on that sucker and it's SOLD! :D

I can... uhh... camoflage myself when I'm performing in a rock concert so I can watch HD movies on a tiny screen while playing games in the smokescreen it emits while taking photos in two directions of said smokescreen and stab myself if I get bored.

also,

does it do porn?

I am sure this was taken into consideration in product planning. It is an effective trade off to get an extra million devices out there over people complaining the screen is too small.

The iPad in its current form is effectively an iPod Touch with a bigger screen. With the addition of the 3G and skype you get a big Internet only iPhone.

Would not be surprised if there is some sort of "iPad Touch 3G" on a product board in Cupertino that is effectively an iPhone that can only to Internet phone called via Skype or other app.

Hell, not that far of a stretch to put that in hardware. Who knows, Internet phone calls without ROM hacks could be a feature in the next generation iPhone that was leaked.

We're holding off on buying up to three iPod Touches — not because of the iPad, but because we're waiting for an iPod Touch with camera. The iPod Touch is a great platform for kids who don't need an iPhone, and most kids love taking photos. So a poor decision by Apple not to make this an inclusion last year I think.

What a nonsense. What's the point of this? Cannibalizing ipod sales - obvious and more profit for Apple. Cannibalizing Macbooks -well, I think we need some numbers about iPad sales of specific models, because the 64GB 3G iPad is almost the same price as a Macbook.

Hahaha it'll do it in HD (on a 4 inch screen) if you can get it on blu-ray!

I wonder if they'd go there. My Nano has a video camera, which kind of makes sense with the YouTube generation and all that, but it can't take stills. Even if it did, with that kind of camera, I don't see the point, just like how I don't bother trying with my iPhone. If your kids like taking photos, wouldn't they be better off without the frustration of those tiny cameras?

In other news: Windows 7 has cannibalized Microsoft's sale of Windows Vista.
Oh, please gimme a break.

Please allow me to fix this sensation seeking headline: "New products sell better than old ones".

See? Wasn't so hard.

ipads and ipods are 2 completely different markets.
one is a tablet that can not be carried around in a pocket,
the ipod is a portable music player meant to be carried around in a pocket.

The reason why ipod sales are dropping is because an itouch and iphone can do all the things an ipod can and more...

also so many people have an ipod already that there more tempted to buy all new product like an ipad then another newer ipod nano.

And when you use it in public the cute girls go iEwwwwww and run away. Enjoy you fantasy birth control device!

My guess is that the money will never be there. Devices like Apple TV or WD Live will get absorbed by TVs. Have you checked out the latest high-end TVs? Capable of playing MKVs in Full HD, access to networks shares, Internet access etc. Not perfect, but they are getting there.

This is also the reason why some people think Apple might enter the TV market, because otherwise they might as well give up their movie store right now. It will never attract a significant amount of customers without easy access from TVs. I doubt it, as there is hardly that much money to be made there, and the need to innovate and turn around a market full of crappy products is not really there. Most people are happy with their TVs.
Another option are cooperations with TV makers to include Apple software on their TVs. But then again, Apple doesn't really want to sell movies and music as a standalone business. They want to sell hardware.

Yes! I agree completely on all points. But I'll admit I'm not psychic and am sometimes surprised by where things end up going.

simple, everyone already has an iPod, so rather than fork out the money for a new iPod, people fork out the extra couple hundred for an iPad. "Its just a few more hundred, but can do so much more!"

Really the solution here should be to move away from flash based iPods and back to magnetic disk storage. Get people to "upgrade" every two years again when the disks start going out.

Ever thought: If an iPad replaces your regular laptop ( especially Pro ) then you probably bought the wrong machine in the first place - i.e., something that was way over powered for what was actually needed.

It's a damn good novelty, all but replaced my laptop at home and I don't see that changing any time soon.

For you perhaps.

For me? I haven't touched my Macbook Pro since I've gotten my iPad. To each their own.

The funny thing is that I was one of the biggest anti-iPad peeps when it was first announced.

Thank you! Some people actually use computers for real work. In that sense, the ipad is more like a TV than a computer.

Well, they are saying that they use mostly the iPad (90% of the time; at home). Less use of the MBP hardly means replacing it.
While it is obvious that many people make badly informed decisions, I think choosing between an MBP and an iPad is pretty obvious. Not many people will make a mistake here. They will mostly make that mistake with the MB.

Anyway I think this is a pretty ridiculous study. It's way too early to say what's eating what and we don't have real numbers. A 64GB 3G iPad replacing an MB would be more profit for Apple IMO.
