NTFS partition recovery suggestions?

My daughter has an external hard drive that has become totally corrupt. It was formatted as NTFS.
When I plug it into my macbook, for example, El Capitan can't read it.

Does anyone have any recommendation of an OSX partition recovery/repair utility ?
Clearly, we would prefer it to be free but I suspect that's not going to happen.

When I first plus it in I get the message "The disk you inserted was not readable on this computer"

The Disk seems to be functioning. If you have data you want to recover from it, your easiest option is to start from a Windows computer & run Check Disk.

If there's no joy with that then it gets rather more complicated or you start spending

If you don't have easy access to a Windows PC, it may be worth trying the free version of

http://www.easeus.com/mac/mac-data-...tion-recovery/mac-ntfs-partition-recovery.htm

to see if it can scan the HDD and find your files; you'll need to copy them elsewhere as OS X can't write to NTFS natively.

I've never used this software...
